About

Koodal Azhagar Temple, also known locally as Koodal Alagiya Perumal or Koodal Aḻagar Temple, is a revered Divya Desam located in the city center of Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

This ancient temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu as the primary deity and Goddess Lakshmi (Mathuravalli Thayar) as a consort, stands as a prominent pilgrimage centre and a living heritage temple with deep roots tracing back to the Pandya period.

Architectural enthusiasts will appreciate its classic Dravidian style, with later additions by the Vijayanagara Empire and Madurai Nayak kings, adding to its historical and cultural significance.

Pilgrims and visitors can easily reach Koodal Azhagar Temple due to its central location near the Periyar Bus Stand and Madurai Junction Railway Station.

The temple is just 1 km from Periyar Bus Stand and 1.3 km from Madurai Junction, making it accessible by a short auto-rickshaw ride or a pleasant walk. Those arriving by air can reach the temple from Madurai International Airport, situated about 10.7 km away, by hiring a prepaid taxi.

The temple is open daily from 5:30 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The best times to visit are early mornings, during the morning hours, or for the evening aarti, especially in the winter months from November to February.

Devotees must adhere to the temple’s dress code: men are expected to wear dhotis or formal trousers, while women should opt for sarees, salwar kameez, or long skirts, avoiding sleeveless or revealing attire. Darshan options include free entry and a special darshan for a nominal fee.

Several poojas are conducted, such as General Darshan, Special Darshan, Vimanam Seva (Upper Levels), and Daily Puja Sponsorship, with rituals performed in Tamil and Sanskrit.

The temple comes alive during its vibrant festivals, including Vaikasi Brahmotsavam (May-June), Masi Theppotsavam (February-March), Panguni Uthram Thiru Kalyana Utsavam (March-April), Garuda Seva, Navarathri, and the Karthikai Festival.

Prasadam like sweet pongal, vada, and puliyodarai is distributed, especially during special occasions. While annadanam is not a daily event, it may be offered during festivals. Photography and mobile phones are strictly prohibited inside the main shrine.

For those seeking accommodation, numerous hotels and guest houses are available nearby, ranging from budget to mid-range. Parking is limited, so public transport or auto-rickshaws are recommended.

Visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as the Meenakshi Amman Temple, Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam, and Gandhi Memorial Museum. For more details, darshan bookings, or online services, the temple’s official website provides further information. For inquiries, contact +91 1800 4253 1111.
