About

Pazhamudircholai Murugan Temple, also known locally as Solaimalai Murugan Temple or Kurinji Nilakkizhavan, is a revered ancient hill temple and pilgrimage centre situated atop the lush Solaimalai (Alagar Hills) near Madurai in Tamil Nadu. Dedicated primarily to Lord Murugan, the temple also enshrines Valli, Deivanai, Lord Ganesha, and Rakkayi Amman, making it a significant destination for devotees seeking darshan and spiritual solace.

The temple’s Dravidian architecture, rooted in the Pandya period and built by Pandyan kings, stands as a testament to its historical and cultural importance. Recognized as a living heritage temple, Pazhamudircholai draws pilgrims year-round, especially during major festivals such as Skanda Sashti (October-November), Vaikasi Vishakha (May-June), Aadi Krithikai (July-August), Aavani Pooram (August-September), and Tamil New Year (April). These festivals are marked by vibrant rituals and special poojas, attracting large gatherings of devotees.

Daily worship at the temple includes morning and evening poojas and Homam, conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit. Darshan is available through free, special, and VIP entry types, catering to the needs of all visitors. The temple is open from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with the best time to visit being early mornings, during evening aarti, in winter (November to February), or during festival seasons.

Visitors are required to adhere to a traditional dress code: men should wear dhotis or trousers/pants covering the knees, avoiding shorts, while women are expected to wear sarees, churidars, or long skirts, avoiding short or revealing attire. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum, and visitors must leave mobile phones and cameras in vehicles or designated lockers before entering the shrine area.

Reaching Pazhamudircholai Murugan Temple is convenient from Madurai city. Buses (Route No. 34 or those bound for Alagar Kovil) are available from Periyar Bus Stand or Pudur, covering about 19-20 km to the foothills. From there, local shuttle buses, private taxis, or autos take visitors up the final 3.4 km stretch to the temple. Direct taxis from Madurai city center (approximately 25 km) are also an option. The nearest railway stations are Madurai Junction (20 km) and Kudal Nagar (15 km), while Madurai International Airport is 30 km away.

For accommodation, basic lodging is available at Alagar Kovil foothills, with a wide range of hotels and guesthouses, including TTDC Tamil Nadu Hotel, located in Madurai city. Nearby attractions include Alagar Kovil (3 km), Meenakshi Amman Temple (20 km), Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal (22 km), and Mariamman Teppakulam (18 km). Dedicated parking is provided at the foot of the hill and near the temple top, with accessibility features for elderly visitors. Fruits are a significant prasadam offering at this sacred site.
