About

Thirukoshtiyur Sowmya Narayana Perumal Temple, also known locally as Thirukoshtiyur temple or Sri Sowmiya Narayana Perumal Kovil, is a revered Divya Desam and ancient pilgrimage centre situated in Thirukoshtiyur, Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu.

This temple stands as a living heritage monument, showcasing the grandeur of Dravidian architecture, and holds significant spiritual importance for devotees of Lord Vishnu.

The temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Vishnu, with Thirumamagal (Lakshmi) and Narasimha (an avatar of Vishnu) also worshipped within its sacred precincts.

Built during the Pandya period by the Pandya kings and later renovated by the Cholas, the temple is recognized as one of the Pandya Naatu Thiruthalangal. Its distinct architectural features and historical legacy make it a must-visit for those interested in Tamil Nadu’s temple heritage.

Devotees can participate in various poojas such as Abhishekam, Archana Seva, and Birthday Blessings, conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit. The temple offers free darshan, allowing pilgrims to experience the spiritual ambiance without any entry fee.

The daily timings for darshan are from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM. The best time to visit is during the winter months from November to February, especially in the mornings or during the evening aarti.

The festival season also attracts many visitors, with major celebrations like the Masi Float Festival (February–March), Vaikunta Ekadasi (December–January), and Navaratri (September–October) being observed with devotion.

Visitors are expected to adhere to a traditional dress code: men are recommended to wear dhotis and women sarees or similar traditional attire. Parking is available near the temple, ensuring convenience for those arriving by road.

Photography is not permitted inside the main sanctum or during active poojas, preserving the sanctity of the rituals. Reaching Thirukoshtiyur Sowmya Narayana Perumal Temple is straightforward. From Madurai, travel via SH-36 towards Sivaganga/Karaikudi; the temple is about 78 km away.
