About

Thayumanavar Temple, also known as Thayumanaswamy Temple or Rockfort Temple, is a revered Hindu pilgrimage centre situated atop the iconic Rockfort (Malaikottai) in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu.

This ancient hill temple, built during the Pallava period by King Mahendravarman I, stands as a testament to Dravidian architecture and spiritual heritage. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, with the presiding deity worshipped as Thayumanavar.

Devotees also offer prayers to Goddess Mattuvar Kuzhalammai (Parvati), Vinayagar (Ganesha), Arumugar (Murugan), Navagrahas, and Veerabadraswami within the temple complex.

The temple is open for darshan from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and again from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM, making it convenient for pilgrims to plan their visit.

Early morning (5–8 AM) and evening aarti times are considered the best periods for darshan, especially during the cooler winter months from November to February. Both free darshan and special darshan (for a nominal fee of ₹3) are available to visitors.

A series of poojas are performed daily in Tamil and Sanskrit, including Ushathkalam at 5:30 a.m., Kalasanthi at 8:00 a.m., Uchikalam at 10:00 a.m., Sayarakshai at 6:00 p.m., Irandamkalam at 8:00 p.m., and Ardha Jamam at 10:00 p.m.

These rituals provide devotees with multiple opportunities to participate in the spiritual proceedings.

Thayumanavar Temple is renowned for its vibrant festivals such as the Chittirai festival (April–May), Aadi Pooram (July–August), Thayumanavar Guru Puja (January–February), and Theppa Thiruvizha (March–April), drawing pilgrims from across the region.

To reach the temple, visitors can travel from Tiruchirappalli Railway Junction (3.5 km away) or Tiruchirappalli Town station (1 km away) by local bus, auto-rickshaw, or taxi towards Malaikottai or Teppakulam.

From the Central Bus Stand, local buses head towards Chathram Bus Stand, which is closer to Rockfort. At the base of the hill, devotees must climb 300–400 rock-cut steps to access the temple.

Two-wheeler and four-wheeler parking is available at the base, but the temple is not wheelchair accessible due to the steps.

Traditional attire is required: men should wear a dhoti (veshti) with a shirt or pyjama, while women are expected to dress modestly in saree, salwar kameez, or churidar with a dupatta. Photography is permitted in the outer premises but prohibited inside the inner sanctum.

Accommodation is easily available near Rockfort Teppakulam area and West Boulevard Road, with budget and mid-range hotels within 2 km.

Nearby attractions include Ucchi Pillayar Temple, Thayumanavar Temple Teppakulam (Temple Tank), Arulmigu Manicka Vinayagar Temple, Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, Arulmigu Uthamar Kovil, and Arulmigu Vayalur Murugan Temple.
