About

Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple, also known locally as Thiruvarangam, Thiruvaranga Tirupati, and Bhooloka Vaikuntam, stands as a revered pilgrimage centre on the banks of the Kaveri River in Srirangam, Tiruchirappalli district, Tamil Nadu.

This ancient temple, recognized as a Divya Desam and protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, showcases the grandeur of Dravidian architecture and traces its origins to the Chola period, with significant expansions by the Pandya, Hoysala, and Vijayanagara dynasties.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped here as Ranganathaswamy, and also enshrines deities such as Ranganayaki, Venu Gopala Krishnaswamy, Dhanvantri, Ramanuja, and the Alwars. Devotees can participate in various poojas, including the early morning Viswaroopa Seva (6:00 AM – 7:15 AM), Sahasranama Archana, Abhishekam, Ekanti Sevai at 10:30 PM, and the Special Vaikunta Gateway Darshan during the Vaikunta Ekadasi festival. Poojas are conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit, offering a spiritually immersive experience.

Darshan at Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple is accessible through free darshan, special darshan, and seeghra darshan, each catering to different preferences, with special and seeghra darshan available for a nominal fee. The temple welcomes devotees daily from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 3:15 PM to 9:00 PM. The best time to visit is during winter (November to February) and early mornings between 5:00 and 8:00 AM for a serene atmosphere.

A traditional dress code is observed: men are required to wear a dhoti (veshti) with an upper cloth or pajamas/pants with a shirt, while women should wear a saree or churidar/salwar kameez with a dupatta. Photography rules are strictly enforced, with no photography allowed inside the main sanctum and cameras to be deposited before entry.

Major festivals celebrated here include Vaikunta Ekadashi (December–January), Adhyayanotsavam (December), Brahmotsavam (March–April), Panguni Uthiram (March–April), Jyestabishekam (June–July), and Chithirai Thiruvizha (April–May), drawing thousands of devotees.

Reaching the temple is convenient: it is about 1 km from Srirangam Railway Station and 13 km from Tiruchirappalli Junction. Tiruchirappalli International Airport is only 10 km away. Local buses, taxis, and autorickshaws provide easy connectivity. Ample parking is available, though it can be crowded during peak times.

Devotees can enjoy free annadanam (lunch) at the temple dining hall and relish prasadams like Aravanai, Akkara Adisal, Sambar Dosai, and more. Accommodation options range from budget lodges and traditional stays within 1–2 km of the temple to premium hotels in Tiruchirappalli city. Nearby attractions include Thiruvanaikoil Jambukeswarar Temple, Tiruchirappalli Rockfort Temple, Kaveri River Ghats, and Samayapuram Mariamman Temple.
