Sringeri Sharadamba Temple

Also known locally as Dakshinamnaya Sringeri Sharada Peetham or Sringeri Mutt, this ancient temple is celebrated for its Dravidian architecture and spiritual ambience.

The temple is dedicated primarily to Goddess Shakti (Amman), with shrines for Sri Vidyashankara, Sri Malahanikareshvara, and Torana Ganapathi within the complex. The Sringeri Sharadamba Temple is recognized as both a state heritage and a living heritage temple.

Its origins are attributed to Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, with the gold idol of Sharadamba installed by Sri Vidyaranya during the Vijayanagara period. The temple complex is a hub for devotees seeking darshan and spiritual solace, offering both free and special darshan options.

The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with mornings (8 AM–12 PM), evening aarti, and the winter and monsoon seasons being the best times to visit.

A variety of poojas are performed at the Sringeri Sharadamba Temple, including Aksharabhyasa (Vidyarambha) from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM (except on Amavasya), Rudrabhishekam (Ekavara), Dindi Deeparadana (Golden Chariot) and Udayastamana Puja on Fridays, Suprabhata Seva, Swarna Pushpa Seva, and Laksharchana.

Poojas are conducted in Sanskrit and Kannada, and devotees can participate in these rituals for spiritual blessings. The temple is renowned for its grand celebrations during Sharada Sharannavaratri, Vidyarambha on Vijaya Dashami, Magha Trithiya Rathotsava, Saraswati Puja, and Chaturmasya.

Pilgrims are required to follow a traditional dress code: men should wear dhoti or mundu and avoid shorts or sleeveless attire, while women are expected to wear saree, salwar kameez, or other modest traditional clothing.

The temple provides daily free food (Annadanam) to all devotees, with prasadam such as puliogare and sweet pongal, especially during festivals. Reaching Sringeri is convenient, with KSRTC buses from major cities like Mangaluru, Bengaluru, Shimoga, Udupi, and Chikkamagaluru.

The nearest railway stations are Udupi (80 km), Shimoga Town (95 km), and Birur Junction (96 km), while the closest airports are Rashtrakavi Kuvempu Airport in Shivamogga (90 km), Mangaluru International Airport (100 km), and Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru (320 km).
