Kalasa Kalaseshwara Temple

Set atop a small hillock on the scenic banks of the Bhadra River, this ancient temple is a significant attraction for devotees of Lord Shiva and is renowned for its spiritual ambience and picturesque surroundings.

The temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, with Goddess Parvati (worshipped here as Sarvanga Sundari Ammanavaru) and both male and female forms of Ganesha also enshrined. The architecture reflects a mixed and renovated style, with roots tracing back to the Vijayanagara period.

Originally constructed by Vidarbha king Shrutha Bindu, it underwent major renovations under the Santara Chief in 1512 and later by the Keladi Nayakas, adding to its historical and cultural significance.

Kalasa Kalaseshwara Temple is open daily from 7:30 AM to 1:00 PM and again from 3:30 PM to 8:30 PM. The best time to visit is during the winter months from November to February, especially in the mornings between 8 AM and 12 PM, or during the vibrant festival season.

Major festivals celebrated here include Girija Kalyanam, a 10-day event, the Kalasa Car Festival (Rathotsava/Jathre) in January-February, and Shivarathri in February-March, drawing pilgrims from across Karnataka and beyond.

Darshan at the temple is free, and devotees can participate in various poojas such as Sahasranama, Mangalarathi, Panchamrutha Abhisheka, Yenne Majjana, Chandika Homa, and Ganapathi Homa, with pooja services conducted in Kannada.

Modest clothing is required for entry; men are encouraged to wear traditional attire like dhotis and may need to remove shirts and banians before entering the sanctum, while women should wear sarees or churidars.

Reaching the temple is convenient, with direct routes from Bangalore, Chikkamagaluru, and Mangaluru. KSRTC buses connect Kalasa with major cities, and the temple is centrally located in town, accessible by local jeep or auto-rickshaw.

The nearest railway stations are Kadur (110 km), Mangalore Central (130 km), and Shivamogga (125 km), while Mangaluru International Airport is 120 km away.

Discreet smartphone photography is permitted outside the main temple area. Devotees can partake in free lunch (Anna Prasada) daily from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, with offerings including laddu, coconut, and dates.
