Rishyashringeshwara Temple Kigga

Recognized as a significant pilgrimage centre and hill temple, it is also known by several local names such as Rishyasringa Temple, Kigga Temple, Rushyashrunga Ura, Kilganeshwara, and Kilganadeva.

The temple stands as a living heritage site, with its current Dravidian-style structure attributed to the Vijayanagara dynasty, while the original shrine dates back to at least the 7th century.

The temple complex houses not only the main sanctum of Lord Shiva but also shrines for Valamburi Ganesha, Mahishamardini, and Shantha. Pilgrims are drawn to the serene ambiance and the spiritual aura that envelops this hilltop sanctuary.

The temple observes a strict dress code, requesting men to wear modest traditional attire such as dhoti or trousers and women to dress in sarees or salwar kameez. Rishyashringeshwara Temple offers free darshan to all devotees.

The temple is renowned for its various poojas, including Abhisheka, Archana, Sahasra Kamala Archana, Maharudra Yaga, Chandi Mahayaga, and Mandalabhisheka, conducted in both Sanskrit and Kannada.

Major festivals celebrated here include the Rishyashringeshwara Annual Festival in March-April, Mahashivaratri in February-March, Maasa Shivaratri every month, and Navaratri during September-October.

On special occasions and festivals, devotees are offered traditional prasadam such as vibhuti, flowers, and fruit, and annadanam is provided.

Reaching the temple is straightforward: from Sringeri, it is a 9–12 km drive by local road; from Chikkamagaluru, a drive of 85–90 km via Balehonnur and Sringeri; and from Mangaluru, a 110–120 km journey via Karkala and Sringeri. Once in Kigga village, the temple is accessible by a short walk.

Ample free or low-cost parking is available near the temple, with only a few steps to climb from road level. The nearest railway stations are Udupi (60 km), Shivamogga (90 km), and Kadur Junction (130 km), while Mangaluru International Airport is about 110 km away.
