About

Sri Doddeswara Swamy Temple Hemavathi is a revered ancient temple and pilgrimage centre located in the Hemavathi Temple Complex, Hemavathi, Sri Sathya Sai district, Andhra Pradesh.

Recognized as an ASI protected monument, this temple is also locally known by several names including Sri Doddeswara Swamy Temple, Sri Henjeru Siddeshwara Swamy Temple, Kashi of the South, Henjarappa, Veerabhadra Siddeshwara, Moorkanappa, and Yajnarishwara.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, with additional shrines for deities such as Malleswara, Virupaksheswara, Chelabhairavaswamy, Kala Bhairava, and the Ashtadikpalakas.

The temple is renowned for its spiritual ambience and draws devotees throughout the year, especially during Maha Shivaratri, which is celebrated with great fervor in February-March. The festival includes unique rituals such as Jatara, Sirimanu, Flower Chariot, Agni Gundam, and Brahma Rathotsavam.

During these occasions, annadanam is organized by local committees, and traditional prasadam like Vibhuthi, Kumkum, Sakkare Pongal, and tamarind rice is distributed to devotees. Darshan at Sri Doddeswara Swamy Temple Hemavathi is accessible to all, with free entry for pilgrims.

The temple is open daily from 5:30 AM to 12:00 PM and from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The best time to visit is during the winter months (November to February), early mornings between 5–8 AM, evening aarti time, or the festival season.

Traditional attire is encouraged for visitors—men are advised to wear a dhoti, pancha, or traditional trousers/kurta, while women should opt for sarees, half-sarees, or churidar/salwar kameez.

Rituals and poojas such as Rudrabhishekam, Archana, and Alankaram are performed in Sanskrit, Telugu, and Kannada.

Photography and videography are strictly prohibited near the main shrines and inner sanctum, but casual photography of the outer architecture is generally allowed with restrictions on commercial equipment. Reaching the temple is convenient from major cities.

From Bengaluru, take NH 44 north towards Hindupur/Penukonda, then local roads to Amarapuram Mandal and Hemavathi village (approximately 160 km). From Puttaparthi, travel northwest via Bukkapatnam and Penukonda (about 109 km).

Local auto-rickshaws and taxis are available from Hindupur, Madakasira, or Penukonda. The nearest railway stations are Challakere (48 km), Penukonda (75 km), and Hindupur (85 km).

The closest airports are Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (155 km), and Sri Sathya Sai Airport, Puttaparthi (109 km). Basic accommodation is available in Hemavathi, with more comfortable options in Hindupur, Penukonda, or Puttaparthi.
