About

Shri Kasi Viswanathar Temple, also known locally as Tenkasi Kasi Viswanathar Temple, South Kashi, or the Varanasi of the South, stands as a revered pilgrimage centre in the heart of Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu.

This ancient temple, built during the Pandya period by Parakrama Pandyan in the 13th century with later additions by the Madurai Nayaks, is a living heritage temple celebrated for its Dravidian architecture and spiritual significance.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Kasi Viswanathar.

Devotees also have the opportunity to offer prayers to several other deities within the complex, including Goddess Parvati (Ulagamman), Ganapathy, Somaskandar, Nataraja, Dhakshinamoorthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahmma, Chandikeshwarar, Bala Murugan, and the 63 Nayanmaars, among others.

The temple’s sanctum and shrines are adorned with intricate carvings and reflect the grandeur of South Indian temple architecture. Located centrally in Tenkasi town near the main bazaar, the temple is easily accessible.

Pilgrims arriving by train can reach the temple from Tenkasi Junction Railway Station, which is just about 2 km away, via auto-rickshaw, taxi, or a short walk. The temple is also within walking distance (500-800 meters) from the Tenkasi Bus Stand.

For those traveling by road, Tenkasi is well connected to Madurai (about 150-160 km) and Tirunelveli (approximately 55 km). Visitors from Courtallam can take a local bus or taxi, covering a distance of 5-7 km. The temple welcomes devotees daily from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

Free darshan is available, and the main poojas—Kalasanthi at 8:30 AM, Uchikalam at 11:30 AM, Sayarakshai at 5:30 PM, and Aravanai Pooja from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM—are conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit.

The best time to visit is during the winter months (November to February), in the morning or during evening aarti, and especially during the vibrant festival season.

Major festivals celebrated here include Maha Shivaratri, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Navarathri, Vinayagar Chathurthi, and Pradhosham.

Devotees should adhere to the temple’s dress code: men are required to wear a dhoti (veshti) with upper cloth or formal attire, while women should wear sarees, half-sarees, or chudidhar with pyjama and upper cloth.

Photography is not permitted inside the main sanctum, and mobile phones are generally restricted in sanctum areas. Prasadam such as vibhuti, kumkum, and special offerings are distributed during poojas, and annadanam is provided during festivals or auspicious occasions.

Accommodation options are plentiful in Tenkasi and nearby Courtallam, with the scenic Courtallam Falls just 5 km away for those wishing to explore local attractions. Limited parking is available near the temple, with additional street parking in the bazaar area. For further details, visitors may contact the temple at +91-04332-22373 or visit the official website.
