Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

This ancient pilgrimage centre is situated at the confluence of the Pankaja and Madhumati rivers, nestled in the scenic valleys of the Manikoot, Brahmakoot, and Vishnukoot mountains in Yamkeshwar Block, Pauri Garhwal district, Uttarakhand.

The temple’s Dravidian architecture and tranquil surroundings make it a significant spiritual destination for devotees and travelers alike.

The temple is open daily from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and during the auspicious periods of Shravan and Maha Shivratri, it remains open 24 hours to accommodate the influx of pilgrims.

The best time to visit is early morning between 5–8 AM, during the winter months from November to February, or during the vibrant festival season, particularly for the annual brahmotsavam.

Maha Shivratri (February–March) and the Shravan Mela/Kanwar Yatra (July–August) are the major festivals celebrated here, drawing thousands of devotees. Darshan at Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is free for all visitors.

The temple prescribes a conservative dress code: men are encouraged to wear full-length trousers or traditional attire such as dhotis or kurta pyjamas, while women should opt for sarees, salwar kameez, or long kurtas with leggings, ensuring that shoulders and legs are fully covered.

Shorts, nightwear, and ripped jeans are strictly not allowed. Daily poojas include the Morning Aarti & Abhishek from 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM, and the Evening Aarti & Rituals from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM.

Devotees can also participate in Jalabhishek and customized Rudrabhishek, with rituals conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi. Prasadam typically consists of bilva leaves, flowers, mishri, and dry prasad packets.

During major festivals, free community meals (bhandara) are organized by volunteers and ashrams. Reaching the temple involves a scenic drive or trek.

From Rishikesh, head towards Laxman Jhula or Ram Jhula, cross the Ganga to Swarg Ashram, and take the Neelkanth Road through Rajaji National Park—about 32 km by road, or opt for a 12–14 km trek from behind Beatles Ashram or 9 km via Garudachatti.

The nearest railway stations are Yog Nagari Rishikesh (27 km) and Haridwar Junction (50 km), while Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is 40 km away. Pilgrims usually stay in Rishikesh, which offers a wide range of accommodation.

Closer to the temple, Ghattu Ghat resorts, local ashrams, dharamshalas, and basic rest houses are available. Dedicated parking is provided 300–600 meters before the temple, though the approach involves steep terrain and steps, making it less accessible for wheelchairs.

Photography and mobile phone use are strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum, though casual photography is allowed in the outer complex except during peak hours or aarti.
