Majhighariani Temple Rayagada

Dedicated to Goddess Shakti, locally venerated as Maa Majhighariani, Maa Majhi Ghariani, and Majhi Gouri, this temple draws devotees from across the region seeking spiritual solace and blessings.

The temple is renowned for its Kalinga architectural style and holds the distinction of being a state heritage site.

Though the precise historical period is unknown or disputed, records attribute its construction to King Vishwanath Dev Gajapati of the Suryavansh dynasty from the Nandapur-Jeypore kingdom.

The temple is conveniently located about 1.5 km from Rayagada Railway Station and just 1 km from the Rayagada Bus Stand, making it easily accessible for pilgrims.

To reach the temple, visitors can arrive at Rayagada Railway Station, exit onto Railway Station Road, and hire an auto-rickshaw or cycle rickshaw for a short ride south-east toward the main town area.

The approach is generally flat and accessible by auto-rickshaw or taxi, with adequate open space and designated roadside areas for parking. However, the inner temple thresholds may have raised steps and may not be fully wheelchair accessible.

Majhighariani Temple welcomes devotees daily from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The best times to visit are during the winter months (November to February), the festival season, or in the early morning hours.

The temple observes a traditional dress code: men are expected to wear dhotis, kurtas, or clean full-length trousers with shirts, while women should opt for sarees, salwar kameez, or other modest ethnic outfits. Shorts and sleeveless clothing are discouraged.

Darshan options include free darshan, special darshan for ₹20, and VIP darshan for ₹100. Poojas and rituals are conducted in Odia, Telugu, and Hindi, catering to the diverse devotee base.

Major festivals celebrated here are Chaitra Parva (Chaitra Yatra) in March–April, Durga Puja (Dussehra) in September–October, and Maha Shivaratri in February–March. During these festivals, traditional sweets and dry bhog/prasad are distributed, and mass feeding (annadanam) is organized.

Photography and video recording are strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum and near the main deity. Casual photography from a distance in the outer courtyard may be permitted, but visitors should check local signboards or consult temple volunteers for guidance.
