About

Mahakal Dham Temple Alipurduar, also known by local names such as Jayanti Bara Mahakal Dham, Mahakal Cave, and Mahakal Pahar, is a revered Hindu pilgrimage centre in the New Town area of Alipurduar, West Bengal.

Dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, with Goddess Kali also worshipped here, this unique temple is set within a natural cave formation, making it both a cave temple and a hill temple.

Its architecture and setting offer a serene spiritual ambiance, attracting devotees and visitors seeking darshan and blessings in a tranquil environment.

The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, allowing ample opportunity for devotees to participate in rituals and poojas. Free darshan is available for all visitors.

Among the key poojas conducted at Mahakal Dham Temple are Mangala Aarti, Shringar, and Sandhya Aarti, with special Sankalpa puja or Archana available on request. These rituals are performed in both Sanskrit and Bengali, reflecting the region’s cultural diversity.

After aartis and during major festivals, devotees receive dry or fruit prasadam, and community feasts (bhandara) are organized, especially during Maha Shivaratri.

The temple comes alive during important festivals such as Maha Shivaratri (February-March), Shravan Somwar (July-August), Navaratri, and Kali Puja (October-November).

The best time to visit is during the winter months from November to February, in the early morning hours between 5–8 AM, during evening aarti, or in the festive season for a truly vibrant spiritual experience.

Reaching Mahakal Dham Temple is convenient due to its proximity to Alipurduar Junction (APDJ), just 2 km away, and New Alipurduar (NOQ), 6 km away. Visitors can arrive in Alipurduar by rail or road (NH 27), then proceed to New Town or B.F. Road area.

Local transport options such as auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws, or taxis are readily available from the railway stations or town center to the temple. For those traveling by air, Bagdogra Airport is 142 km away, and Cooch Behar Airport is 50 km away.

Accommodation is easily accessible, with hotels like Dooars Mountain, Bangabhumi, and Dooars Hillton located in Alipurduar town near the temple. Informal roadside or open space parking is available, though dedicated accessibility features are limited.

Photography is generally restricted inside the main sanctum but permitted in the outer premises.

Visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as Buxa Tiger Reserve, Sikia Jhora, Baneswar Shiva Temple, Jaldapara National Park, and Chilapata Wildlife Sanctuary, making Mahakal Dham Temple Alipurduar a spiritually enriching and scenic destination in West Bengal. Modest, traditional, or casual ethnic attire is expected for both men and women during temple visits.
