Kiriteswari Temple (Shakti Peeth)

This ancient temple is dedicated to Goddess Shakti, worshipped here in her powerful form as Mahishamardini, and is also referred to by local names such as Kiriteshwari, Mukuteshwari, and Kirit Shakti Peeth.

The temple complex features subsidiary shrines for Samvarta Bhairava, a form of Lord Shiva, and other traditional deities, making it a significant destination for devotees seeking spiritual solace and blessings.

The temple is renowned as one of the Shakti Peethas, with a history of worship at this sacred site spanning over a thousand years.

The present structure, showcasing the distinct Bengali (Chala) architectural style, was reconstructed in the 19th century by Maharaja Darpanarayan Roy and later renovated by King Yogendranarayan Roy.

Managed by a local trust, Kiriteswari Temple continues to serve as a living heritage temple, drawing pilgrims and visitors throughout the year. Darshan at Kiriteswari Temple is free for all, with the temple open daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

The inner sanctum remains closed between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Regular poojas include the Nitya Puja and Alati, with special rituals conducted on new moon (Amavasya) nights, as well as on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Poojas are performed in Bengali and Sanskrit, maintaining the temple’s traditional spiritual practices.

Devotees are encouraged to adhere to the prescribed dress code: men should wear traditional or formal clean attire, while women are requested to dress in sarees, salwar kameez, or modest kurtis with dupattas.

The temple comes alive during major festivals such as Durga Puja and Navaratri in October, Kali Puja and Amavasya Observations in October–November, Ratanti Amavasya in January–February, and the Kiriteswari Fair (Poush Mela) in December–January.

The best time to visit is during winter, particularly in the morning or during evening aarti.

To reach Kiriteswari Temple, pilgrims can arrive at Murshidabad town by train or road, proceed to the Bhagirathi River ferry ghats, cross by local ferry, and then take a toto to the temple, which is about 5–6 km from the riverbank.
