Keladi Rameshwara Temple

Recognized as an ASI protected monument, this temple is a significant pilgrimage centre and a fine example of mixed and renovated architecture from the Vijayanagara period.

Built by Chaudappa Nayaka, the founder of the Keladi Nayaka dynasty, the temple stands as a testament to the region’s rich spiritual and historical heritage.

The main sanctum is devoted to Lord Shiva, while the temple complex also houses shrines for Goddess Parvati, Veerabhadra, and the Saptamatrikas, offering devotees a holistic spiritual experience.

Daily poojas are performed in Kannada, and special poojas can be arranged on request, allowing worshippers to participate in rituals according to tradition. Darshan at the Keladi Rameshwara Temple is free for all visitors, making it accessible to pilgrims and tourists alike.

The temple is open for darshan from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM and again from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The best time to visit is during the winter months from November to February, especially in the morning hours when the temple ambience is serene and inviting.

Visitors are encouraged to dress modestly; men should wear traditional attire such as dhotis or comfortable clothes with shoulders and knees covered, while women are recommended to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or long skirts, also ensuring shoulders and knees are covered.

Keladi Rameshwara Temple celebrates important festivals like Mahashivaratri and the Karage Festival, the latter taking place in March–April. Prasadam, typically fruit or flowers, is customary, and a unique local tradition involves feeding fish in the adjacent water body.

Reaching the temple is convenient: travel to Sagara town by road from Bengaluru, Shivamogga, or Mangalore, then take SH 77 toward Soraba and proceed about 8 km north to Keladi village. The temple is centrally located and accessible by taxi, auto-rickshaw, or local bus from the Sagara bus stand.

The nearest railway stations are Sagara Jambagaru (6 km), Talaguppa (20 km), and Shimoga Town (80 km), while Shivamogga Airport (78 km) and Mangaluru International Airport (220 km) are the closest airports.

Limited open parking is available near the entrance, and the temple is accessible by a few stone steps, with provisions for wheelchair access. Photography is generally permitted in the premises, though it is advisable to seek permission before capturing rituals or close-ups of deities.
