About

Ikkeri Aghoreshwara Temple, also known locally as Aghoreshwara Temple or Ancient Shri Aghoreshwara Swamy Devalaya, is a revered Hindu pilgrimage centre located in Ikkeri village, Shivamogga district, Karnataka.

This ancient temple, dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, stands as a significant monument from the Vijayanagara period and was built by the Keladi Nayakas.

Recognized as an ASI protected site, the temple is a remarkable blend of architectural styles, having undergone various renovations over the centuries.

The temple complex houses sanctums for several deities besides Lord Shiva, including Goddess Parvati, Nandi, Ganesha, Subramanya, Mahishasuramardini, and Bhairava. As a result, devotees visiting Ikkeri Aghoreshwara Temple can experience a spiritually enriching darshan of multiple revered forms.

The temple is open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, offering free darshan for all visitors. Poojas and rituals are conducted in Kannada, and light prasadam is distributed after the main daily pooja. However, there is no regular annadanam service at this temple.

The best time to visit Ikkeri Aghoreshwara Temple is during the early morning hours between 5 and 8 AM, or in the pleasant winter months from November to February. The monsoon season, from June to September, also provides a serene atmosphere for devotees.

The temple observes major festivals such as Maha Shivaratri and the Annual Temple Festival, both celebrated in February and March, drawing pilgrims from across Karnataka and beyond.

Visitors are advised to adhere to the temple’s dress code: modest, traditional attire is recommended for both men and women, with shorts, sleeveless tops, and short skirts discouraged. Ample free parking is available on the premises, though the main entrance may not be fully wheelchair accessible.

Photography is permitted within the temple premises, but camera use may be subject to certain restrictions. Reaching Ikkeri Aghoreshwara Temple is convenient via Sagara town, which is just 6 km away.

Travelers can arrive at Sagar Railway Station or Shivamogga Railway Station, with Sagara being the nearest major town. From Sagara, local taxis or auto-rickshaws are readily available for the short ride to Ikkeri.

The nearest airports are Mangaluru International Airport (142 km) and Bangalore International Airport (350 km). Accommodation options include hotels and lodges in Sagara, homestays near Talaguppa, and a wider range of choices in Shivamogga city.

Nearby attractions for pilgrims and tourists include Keladi Rameshwara Temple (8 km away), Jog Falls, Kedareshwara Swamy Temple in Balligavi, and Gudavi Bird Sanctuary, making Ikkeri a rewarding destination for spiritual seekers and heritage enthusiasts alike.
