Kartik Swami Temple

Situated atop Kronch Parvat near Kanakchauri village in Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand, this ancient pilgrimage centre is renowned for its serene mountain setting and spiritual ambiance.

The temple is recognized as a state heritage and living heritage temple, managed by the local panchayat and trust, with roots linked to the Katyuri era and subsequent community-led restorations. Pilgrims visiting Kartik Swami Temple can experience darshan of Lord Murugan with free entry.

The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 11:30 AM and 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM, making early morning hours and evening aarti the best times for a peaceful visit. Morning Aarti is performed at 7:00 AM, and the Evening Aarti (Sandhya Aarti) at 6:00 PM.

Other poojas such as 108 Valampuri Shankh Pooja, Kalash Sthapana, and Vastra Aadan Pradaan are also conducted, with rituals performed in Sanskrit and Hindi.

The temple is especially vibrant during festivals like Kartik Purnima in November, Kalash Yatra/Kartik Swami Mahayaghya in June, and Navratri in September-October. During these times, devotees can participate in special poojas and enjoy free community meals (bhandara).

Simple prasadam such as traditional sweets, dry fruits, or charnamrit is offered after aarti. To reach Kartik Swami Temple, pilgrims typically travel to Rishikesh or Haridwar by road, train, or air.

From there, the journey continues by road to Rudraprayag via Devprayag and Srinagar, followed by a drive to Kanakchauri village. The final stretch is a scenic 3 km uphill trek from Kanakchauri to the temple on Kronch Parvat.

Parking is available at Kanakchauri, but the temple itself is accessible only on foot and is not wheelchair accessible.

Basic guesthouses and homestays such as Mayadeep Holiday Home and Kanak Kartikey Homestay are available in Kanakchauri, along with dharamshala or ashram-style lodging near the temple ridge. Visitors are advised to wear modest, warm clothing due to the high-altitude winds.

Photography is strictly prohibited near the main idol and inner sanctum but is allowed in the outer premises and along the trek, subject to local advisories.
