About

Kanakachalapathi Temple Kanakagiri, also known locally as Kanakachala Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, is a revered ancient temple and prominent pilgrimage centre located in Kanakagiri, Koppal district, Karnataka.

Dedicated primarily to Lord Vishnu, the temple also houses shrines for Lakshmi Devi, Garuda, Sanjeeva Murti (Hanuman), the Alwars, Mahesh, Brahma, and Bala Krishna, making it a significant destination for devotees seeking darshan of multiple deities.

This temple stands as a fine example of Dravidian architecture, built during the Vijayanagara period by the Nayakas of Kanakagiri. Recognized as an ASI protected monument and a state heritage site, the temple complex attracts history enthusiasts and spiritual seekers alike.

The serene ambience and intricate architectural details are best appreciated in the early morning or during the winter months from November to February.

The festival season, particularly during the Kanakagiri Utsava (Jatra) and Lakshmi Narasimha Jatre in February-March, and Vaikunta Ekadashi in December-January, draws large crowds of pilgrims.

The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM, allowing ample time for devotees to participate in rituals and seek blessings. Free darshan is available for all visitors.

Daily puja and aarathi are performed, with special poojas such as Kalyanotsava (Celestial wedding), Garudotsava (Garuda procession), Hanumotsava (Hanuman procession), Hamsotsava (Hamsa procession), and Rathotsava (Chariot Festival) celebrated with devotion.

Rituals are conducted in Kannada, and prasadam is distributed after the morning and evening aarti. Pilgrims can also partake in a free meal (annadanam) by obtaining a coupon, served in a clean dining hall.

Traditional attire is recommended for visitors: men are advised to wear dhoti or respectful casual wear, while women are encouraged to wear sarees or churidar kameez. Photography is permitted in the outer courtyard and for the temple’s architecture, but is prohibited inside the sanctum sanctorum.

Permission from temple authorities is required for camera use. Reaching Kanakachalapathi Temple is convenient from nearby towns. It is 21 km from Gangavathi via SH29, and 42-43 km from Koppal via SH63 or NH367A, accessible by road or bus. Taxis are available from Gangavathi, Koppal, and Bellary.
