Kanak Durga Temple Chilkigarh

Dedicated primarily to Goddess Shakti, this temple also houses a shrine for Lord Vishnu, making it a significant pilgrimage centre for devotees seeking spiritual solace amidst the tranquil forest surroundings.

The temple stands as a fine example of Bengali (Chala) architecture and is recognized as a state heritage site. Its origins are attributed to King Gopinath Singh (or Gopinath Samanta), the Raja of Chilkigarh, though the exact historical period remains unknown or disputed.

The temple’s unique setting within a sacred grove adds to its serene and mystical ambiance, drawing pilgrims and visitors from across the region. Kanak Durga Temple Chilkigarh welcomes devotees daily from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM, with core darshan hours between 10:30 AM and 5:00 PM.

The temple remains closed for rituals from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM. Entry for darshan is free, allowing all devotees to seek blessings without any fee.

Visitors are advised to observe the temple’s dress code: men should wear traditional or modest attire such as dhotis, kurtas, or full-length trousers with shirts, while women are expected to don sarees, salwar kameez, or conservative kurtis, avoiding revealing or overly westernized clothing.

Reaching the temple is convenient from Kolkata, with options to drive via NH 16 to Jhargram and then proceed to Chilkigarh, or take a train from Howrah or Shalimar to Jhargram Railway Station. From Jhargram, the temple is about 14–15 km away and can be accessed by hiring an auto, toto, or taxi.

The nearest railway stations are Jhargram (14 km) and Gidni (12 km), while the closest airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, approximately 188 km away.

Designated parking is available near the entrance for a nominal fee, followed by a 10–15 minute walk through the forest to reach the shrine. For accommodation, pilgrims can choose from the Jhargram Rajbari Tourist Complex, Chilkigarh Tourist Guest House, or local homestays in Jhargram town.

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum but permitted in the outer premises and natural surroundings, provided it does not disturb rituals or devotees.
