Golu Devta Temple Champawat

This ancient pilgrimage centre is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, with significant worship also offered to Golu Devta (revered as Gaur Bhairav or Goljyu), Kalinka (Garh Devi), Harishchand Devjyun (Haru Dev), Sem Devjyun, and Kalva Devta in his Bhairava form.

The temple stands as a living heritage site, managed by a local panchayat or trust, and is believed to have legendary associations with the Katyuri dynasty, attributed to prince Goril or Golu Devta.

The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, making it accessible for devotees seeking darshan throughout the day. Free darshan is available to all visitors.

The best times to visit are during the early morning hours (5–8 AM) or later in the morning (8 AM–12 PM), especially on weekdays when the temple is less crowded. Both winter (November to February) and summer (March to May) are considered ideal seasons for a peaceful pilgrimage experience.

Devotees participate in a variety of poojas, including general darshan and chadhava rituals, where offerings such as bells, white cloth, and written petitions are made. Special poojas like Teen Divas (a three-day ceremony) and Navratra (nine-day puja) are conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi.

Major festivals celebrated at the temple include the Golu Devta Festival or Jagar in September, Navratri during Chaitra and Sharad (March–April and September–October), Makar Sankranti in January, and Baisakhi in April.

These occasions are marked by vibrant community gatherings and bhandaras (community feasts), where devotees distribute local sweets, fruits, halwa, poori, ghee, milk, and curd. However, there is no daily structured annadanam.

Visitors are expected to adhere to a respectful dress code: men should wear traditional or modest attire such as full-length trousers, jeans, shirts, or kurtas, while women are encouraged to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or other full-length traditional garments.

Shorts, sleeveless clothing, revealing attire, or short skirts are discouraged or not permitted. Reaching the Golu Devta Temple is convenient via road to Champawat town from major Uttarakhand cities.

From the Champawat bus station, the temple is about 2 km away in the Kanalgaon / Goral Chaur area, accessible by following Golu Devta Mandir Marg near the Goral Chaur field.

Basic roadside and open area parking is available approximately 200 meters from the temple, though space is limited during festivals. Accommodation options are readily available in and around Champawat town for pilgrims planning an extended stay.

Photography and video recording are strictly prohibited inside or facing the main inner sanctum, but casual photography is allowed in the outer premises and courtyards with the priests’ consent.
