Baleshwar Temple

Situated in the heart of Champawat, Uttarakhand, this hill temple stands as a significant pilgrimage centre and is recognized as an ASI-protected monument.

The temple is located conveniently near the main bus station on NH-125 in the Lohaghat Range, making it accessible for devotees and visitors alike.

The temple complex is renowned for its Nagara (North Indian) architectural style, reflecting the craftsmanship of the Chand Dynasty, though the exact historical period of its construction remains unknown or disputed.

Alongside the main sanctum of Lord Shiva, devotees can also offer prayers to Ratneshwar, another form of Shiva, and Champawati Durga, a manifestation of Goddess Durga, within the Baleshwar Group of Temples.

Baleshwar Temple welcomes visitors daily with darshan timings from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Entry for darshan is free of charge.

The temple observes a modest dress code: men are encouraged to wear full-length trousers, dhotis, or kurtas, while women should opt for sarees, salwar kameez, or modest kurtis that cover shoulders and legs. Shorts and sleeveless attire are discouraged to maintain the sanctity of the premises.

Daily worship at Baleshwar Temple includes Morning Aarti from 5:00 AM to 6:00 AM and Evening Aarti from 4:00 PM, concluding by night. Nitya Puja, including Jal Abhishek and other offerings, is performed in Hindi.

During major festivals such as Maha Shivaratri (February-March), Shravan Maas (July-August), and Navratri/Durga Puja (September-October and March-April), the temple becomes a vibrant hub of spiritual activity, with community bhandaras and special celebrations.

For those planning a visit, the best times are during winter months (November to February), early mornings, evening aarti, or the festival season. Directions are straightforward: arrive at Tanakpur or Kathgodam Railway Station, then proceed by taxi or bus to Champawat.

From the main market or bus station, the temple is a short 450-meter walk. Pantnagar Airport is the nearest air link at 160 km, while Tanakpur (60 km) and Kathgodam (180 km) are the closest railway stations.

Accommodation is plentiful within walking distance, including Hotel Mount View, Hotel Deodar Valley, KMVN Tourist Rest House, Aashirvaad Homestay, and Hotel Shiva Residency. While there is no dedicated on-site parking, visitors can use roadside or main town parking and walk to the temple.

The terrain includes ancient stone steps, which may limit accessibility for some. Photography inside the inner sanctum or during rituals is typically restricted, but exterior photography may be permitted with prior approval from temple staff.

Simple prasadam such as sweets, fruits, vibhuti, and flowers is offered daily, with larger community meals during major festivals.
