Ghanteswari Temple

This ancient temple, recognized as a state heritage site, stands out for its distinct Kalinga architectural style and its unique reputation as the “Lighthouse without light” due to its historical significance among river navigators and fisherfolk who contributed to its establishment.

Dedicated to Goddess Shakti, the temple draws pilgrims and devotees throughout the year, especially during the auspicious Navaratra Puja celebrations in both Chaitra (March-April) and Sharad (September-October), as well as during Nuakhai (August-September) and Maha Shivaratri (February-March).

The temple’s vibrant spiritual atmosphere is enhanced by daily rituals and poojas such as Mangala Alati, Mailam, Abhishek, and Sandhya Alati.

Visitors can participate in free darshan from 4:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with the evening aarti and winter months (November to February) considered the best times to visit for a serene experience.

For devotees planning their visit, the temple enforces a traditional dress code: men are encouraged to wear dhoti-kurta or neat casual wear, while women should opt for sarees, salwar kameez, or modest ethnic attire.

Pilgrims can travel by car, taxi, or auto-rickshaw southwest toward Chiplima, crossing the Caurpur bridge at Mundoghat or following state highways toward the Chiplima Hydro Power Plant. The temple is located near the power project site along the riverbank.

Free parking is available near the temple’s approach zone, though the terrain may be challenging for those with mobility impairments. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum but permitted in the outer courtyards and riverside areas.
