Gauri Devi Temple Gaurikund

Located in the town of Gaurikund, Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand, this ancient hill temple is a significant stop for devotees embarking on the Sonprayag-Kedarnath trekking route.

The temple is dedicated primarily to Goddess Shakti (Amman), with Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha also worshipped within its sacred premises. The temple’s unique setting as a riverbank shrine in the Himalayas adds to its spiritual ambiance.

Pilgrims are welcomed for darshan and aarti, with rituals conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi. The temple offers free darshan, and visitors can participate in general darshan and aarti during its open hours.

The temple remains open from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM, but it is closed from November to April for winter. For those planning a visit, the best times are early mornings or weekdays to avoid crowds, as well as during the festival season.

Major festivals celebrated here include Maha Shivaratri (February-March), Navratri (Chaitra & Sharad, March-April and September-October), and the Gaurikund Yatra Season Fairs in May, June, September, and October. Reaching Gauri Devi Temple involves a journey through the scenic Himalayan terrain.

Pilgrims can arrive at Rishikesh, Haridwar, or Dehradun by train or flight, then travel by taxi or bus via NH-7 to Rudraprayag and onward on NH-107 through Augustmuni and Guptkashi to Sonprayag.

Private vehicles must be parked at Sonprayag, with government shuttle jeeps covering the final 5 km uphill to Gaurikund, where the temple is located at the base of the Kedarnath trek.

The temple’s mountainous terrain limits wheelchair accessibility, and visitors are advised to wear traditional or modest clothing as per the dress code. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum, though the outer premises and landscape may be photographed with permission.

Simple prasad such as mishri, dry fruits, or sweets is distributed, and local bhandaras and eateries provide meals to pilgrims. Nearby attractions include the Gaurikund Hot Water Spring, Sonprayag, Triyuginarayan Temple, Guptkashi’s Vishwanath Temple, and the renowned Kedarnath Temple.
