Garjiya Devi Temple

This unique hill and riverbank temple is a prominent pilgrimage centre, drawing devotees seeking darshan of Goddess Shakti/Amman, the temple’s presiding deity.

The sanctum also houses other deities, including Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Saraswati, Batuk Bhairava, and Lord Lakshmi-Narayan, making it a spiritually significant destination for worshippers. The temple is accessible from Ramnagar, which is well-connected by train, bus, and car.

To reach Garjiya Devi Temple, visitors drive approximately 13–14 km north from Ramnagar on NH 12/NH 309 towards Dhikuli and Garjiya Village. Ample parking is available near the riverbank for a nominal fee.

From there, pilgrims walk past local shops, cross a scenic pedestrian suspension bridge over the Kosi River, and ascend 80–90 steep stone steps to reach the temple perched atop the rock. Please note that the temple is not wheelchair accessible due to the steps and bridge.

Darshan at Garjiya Devi Temple is free for all devotees. The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The best time to visit is during the early morning hours (5–8 AM), late mornings, or during the evening aarti.

The winter months (November–February) and festival seasons see a surge of pilgrims, especially during Kartik Purnima, Navratri (Sharad and Chaitra), and the Shravan month, when special bhandaras (community meals) are organized.

Daily aarti is performed in Sanskrit and Hindi, and standard prasadam such as coconut, sweets, flowers, and sindoor is distributed.

Visitors are expected to adhere to a traditional dress code: men should wear modest attire with shoulders and knees covered, and may need to remove shirts in the inner sanctum; women should wear sarees, salwar kameez, or long skirts with covered tops, and if wearing trousers, wrap a cloth or dhoti over them before approaching the deity.

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the sanctum and near the main deity, but is permitted in the outer temple areas and for landscape views, provided prayers or rituals are not filmed.
