Naina Devi Temple (Shakti Peeth)

Perched at the northern end of the scenic Naini Lake, this ancient hill temple is a significant pilgrimage centre for devotees of Goddess Shakti (Amman).

The temple also enshrines Mata Kali, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Hanuman, making it a spiritually vibrant destination for visitors seeking darshan and blessings. The temple is built in the Nagara (North Indian) architectural style and holds the status of both a state and living heritage temple.

Its historical roots trace back to the 15th century, with the modern idol installed by Moti Ram Shah in 1842 and the current structure rebuilt in 1883 after a major landslip.

The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, allowing ample time for devotees to participate in rituals and seek darshan.

A variety of poojas are performed at Naina Devi Temple, including the Morning Aarti (Mangal / Shringaar Aarti) from around 4:00 AM to 7:00 AM and the Evening Aarti (Sandhya Aarti) at approximately 7:00 PM.

Other rituals such as Durga Saptashati Path, Hawan, and Navagraha Puja are also conducted, with prayers offered in Sanskrit and Hindi. Free darshan is available to all visitors, and consecrated sweets (prasad) are distributed after aartis.

During major festivals like Navratri and Nanda Devi Mela, community-led food distribution (bhandara) is organized.

The temple observes several vibrant festivals, including Nanda Devi Mahotsav (August/September), Sharad Navratri (September/October), Chaitra Navratri (March/April), and Shravani Mela (July/August).

The best time to visit is during the morning hours, winter and summer months, festival seasons, or on weekdays for a less crowded experience.

Reaching Naina Devi Temple is convenient: arrive at Nainital via Tallital or the main city bus stand, proceed to Mallital, and then travel about 3 km by walking, cycle rickshaw, auto-rickshaw, or taxi to the temple gates.

The final approach involves a short walk along the lake and a set of stone steps. The nearest railway stations are Kathgodam (35 km) and Haldwani (40 km), while Pantnagar Airport (55 km) and Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi (300 km) are the closest airports.

Visitors should adhere to the temple’s dress code, which requires modest attire for both men and women. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the inner shrine, though permitted in the outer courtyard.
