Ethipothala Sivalayam

Known locally as Ethipothala Sivalayam and Ethipothala Dattatreya Temple, this pilgrimage centre is uniquely set on a hill and along a riverbank, offering devotees a tranquil spiritual experience amidst natural beauty.

The temple is dedicated to a primary deity categorized as "Other," with Ranganatha (Vishnu) also worshipped here, reflecting the temple’s inclusive spiritual significance.

The temple welcomes visitors daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with the serene early morning hours between 5 and 8 AM considered the best time for darshan, especially during the monsoon (June–September) and winter (November–February) seasons.

Devotees can participate in traditional poojas such as Abhishekam and Archana, conducted in Telugu. Entry for darshan is free, making it accessible for all pilgrims.

Ethipothala Sivalayam observes several important festivals, including Maha Shivaratri in February-March, Karthika Masam in November-December, and Navaratri/Dussehra in October.

During these festive occasions, Annadanam (community meal) is commonly organized, and prasadam like pulihora and sweet pongal is distributed to devotees. Visitors are encouraged to wear traditional and decent attire, as recommended for both men and women.

The temple’s location near Ethipothala Falls makes it a popular destination not only for spiritual seekers but also for nature lovers.

Nearby attractions include the Ethipothala Waterfalls, Nagarjuna Sagar Dam (11 km away), Nagarjunakonda Museum & Island, the Dattatreya Temple, and the Crocodile Breeding Centre.

Reaching the temple is convenient with clear directions: from Hyderabad, take NH65 towards Vijayawada, then follow the Nagarjuna Sagar/Macherla road to Ethipothala park area; from Guntur, travel towards Macherla and take the state highway to Nagarjuna Sagar; from Macherla, local buses or taxis are available.

The final approach involves descending steps from the entrance to the temple at the base of the waterfalls. The nearest railway stations are Macherla (15 km), Nadikude Junction (30 km), and Guntur Junction (140 km).

For air travelers, Vijayawada Airport is 177 km away and Hyderabad Airport is 190 km away. Parking is available at the falls viewpoint for a fee. Photography with phone cameras is freely allowed, while professional cameras may require a fee and local approval.
