Ernakulathappan Temple (Ernakulam Shiva Temple)

Located on Durbar Hall Road in the Marine Drive area of Ernakulam, this ancient and royal temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Ernakulathappan.

The temple also houses shrines for Goddess Parvathi, Kiratamurthy, Lord Ganesha, Lord Sastha (Ayyappan), Lord Murugan (Subrahmanya), Lord Hanuman, and Nagaraja, making it a significant spiritual destination for devotees seeking darshan of multiple deities.

The temple’s architecture reflects the traditional Kerala style, with a history that traces its original shrine to Thushath Kaimal.

The current structure was rebuilt in 1846 under Diwan Sri Edakkunni Sankara Warrier during the Kingdom of Cochin, and today it is recognized as a living heritage temple managed by a local trust. Devotees can visit the temple between 3:30 AM and 11:00 AM, and again from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

The best time for darshan is early morning (5–8 AM), during the evening aarti, in the winter months from November to February, or during the annual brahmotsavam and festival season.

The temple observes a strict dress code: men must wear a traditional dhoti (mundu) with the upper torso bare, while women are required to wear a saree, traditional skirt and blouse, or churidar with dupatta.

A variety of poojas are performed daily, including Nirmalyam & Nadathurakal at 3:30 AM, Abishekam from 4:00 AM to 4:45 AM, Shankhabhishekam at 5:15 AM (₹215), and several others such as Pantheeradi Pooja, Uchcha Pooja, and Deeparadhana in the evening.

Special offerings like Vella Nivedhyam, Noorum Palum, Karuka Homam, Ganapathy Homam, Appam, Ellu Nivedhyam, Bhagavath Seva, and Ada are available at specified rates. Rituals are conducted in Sanskrit and Malayalam, and free darshan is offered to all devotees.

The temple celebrates major festivals including the Utsavam (annual temple festival) in January–February (Makaram month) and Maha Shivaratri in February–March.

Prasadam includes Vibhuthi, Chandanam, kumkum, and nivedhyam items, with free Annadanam organized on auspicious days and during the annual festival. Reaching the Ernakulathappan Temple is convenient. Arrive at Kochi city center via M.G.

Road or Ernakulam South area, and take an auto-rickshaw, taxi, or app-based cab to Durbar Hall Road. The nearest metro station is Maharaja’s College, just a 5–10 minute walk away. Ernakulam Junction (South) railway station is 1.1 km from the temple, while Cochin International Airport is 35 km away.
