About

Adi Sankara Janmabhoomi Temple Kalady, also known as Adi Shankara Janmabhoomi Kshethram or Sri Sringeri Shankara Math, Kalady, is a revered pilgrimage centre situated on the serene northern bank of the Periyar River in Thalayattumpilli/Vadakkumbhagom, Kalady, Ernakulam district, Kerala.

This ancient ashram temple, built in the Kerala architectural style, stands as a living heritage site and is managed by the Sringeri Sharada Peetham in collaboration with the local panchayat trust.

The temple was established by Jagadguru Sri Sachidananda Shivabhinava Narasimha Bharati Swami with the support of Sri Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma Maharaja of Travancore.

The primary deity worshipped here is Lord Shiva, and the temple complex also houses shrines for Adi Shankaracharya (as Dakshinamurthy), Goddess Sharadamba (Sarada Devi), Sri Shakti Ganapati (Lord Ganesha), Aryamba Samadhi (a memorial shrine for Adi Shankara’s mother), and Sri Krishna, the family deity, in the ancestral temple within the complex.

The temple is a significant spiritual destination for devotees seeking darshan and blessings from these deities. Devotees can experience free darshan during the temple’s open hours: 5:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

The best time to visit is early morning or during the winter months (November to February) and the festival seasons.

The temple observes a traditional dress code: men are expected to wear a dhoti or modest trousers with a clean shirt, while women should wear saree, salwar kameez, or churidar covering legs and shoulders.

The temple conducts several daily and special poojas, including Mahaganapathy Homam (daily at around 6:30 AM), Sahasranamarchana, Sri Devi Mahathmya Parayanam, Deepaaradhana (evening), and special rituals like Suvasini Pooja, Kanya Pooja, Lalitha Homam, and Chandika Homam during festival days.

Poojas are performed in Sanskrit, Malayalam, Tamil, and Kannada, accommodating devotees from diverse backgrounds. Major festivals celebrated here include Sri Shankara Jayanthi (April-May), Sarada Sarannavarathri (Navaratri, September-October), and Prathishta Day (February).

Daily prasadam is distributed after evening rituals, and annadanam (free food) is offered during major festivals.

Reaching the temple is convenient: it is about 1 km from Kalady Bus Stand and easily accessible from Cochin International Airport (7 km) and Angamaly (7 km) or Aluva (18 km) railway stations. Local buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws are readily available.

Ample parking is provided outside the complex for a nominal fee. Accommodation options include guest houses and choultries run by Sringeri Math, Sree Ramakrishna Advaita Ashram, and several budget hotels within 1–2 km.

Nearby attractions include Adi Shankara Sthoopam, Crocodile Ghat on the Periyar River, Sree Krishna Temple, Vamanamoorthy Temple, Kodanad Elephant Training Centre, Malayattoor Church, and Iringole Kaavu. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the temple premises. For more information, devotees may visit the official website or contact the temple office directly.
