Aluva Mahadeva Temple

This living heritage temple is a significant pilgrimage centre, drawing devotees from across Kerala and beyond, especially during major festivals and auspicious occasions.

Dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, the temple also houses a shrine for Lord Ayyappa, offering devotees the opportunity for darshan and worship in a tranquil riverside setting.

The temple’s unique location on the Periyar’s sandbanks, often referred to as Dakshina Ganga, provides a spiritually uplifting atmosphere, particularly during early mornings and evenings.

The temple is open daily, with timings from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, making early morning (5–8 AM), morning (8 AM–12 PM), and evening aarti time ideal for visits.

The winter months (November to February), festival season, and the annual brahmotsavam are considered the best times to experience the temple’s vibrant spiritual life.

The Aluva Mahadeva Temple is renowned for its major festivals, including Aluva Sivarathri (Maha Shivaratri) in February-March (Kumbham), Karkidaka Vavu Bali in July-August (Karkidakam), Thiruvutsavam/Utsavam in March-April (Meenam), and Vavu Bali in Tulam during October-November.

During these times, large-scale annadanam and special rituals are conducted, attracting thousands of pilgrims. Devotees can participate in poojas such as Dhara (INR 20) and Rudrabhishekam (INR 100), performed in Sanskrit and Malayalam.

Standard Shiva prasadam, including vibhuti, kumkum, sandalwood paste, and sweet nivedyam, is distributed after poojas.

Free darshan is available for all visitors, and a traditional dress code is strictly enforced: men must wear a dhoti (mundu) and be bare-chested or use a traditional upper cloth, while women are expected to wear a saree, long skirt with blouse, or churidar with dupatta.

Reaching the temple is convenient: arrive at Aluva Town by train, air, or bus, then travel about 3 km by auto-rickshaw or taxi from Aluva Railway Station or KSRTC Bus Stand to Aluva Manappuram/Shiva Temple Road. The temple lies about 1 km off the Marthanda Varma Bridge on NH 544.

The nearest railway station is Aluva (3.1 km), with Ernakulam Town (14 km) and Ernakulam Junction (20 km) also accessible. Cochin International Airport is just 11 km away.

Accommodation ranges from budget lodges to premium hotels like Vivanta Kochi Aluva and Mezkar Residency within 0.5–1.5 km of Aluva town center, with additional pilgrim and local stays available. Open-air parking is provided on normal days, though access may be restricted during major festivals.

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the inner temple premises and sanctum.
