About

Durga Kund Mandir, also known locally as Durgakund Mandir, Durga Mandir, and the Monkey Temple, is a revered Shakti Peetha and pilgrimage centre located in the Durgakund area of Bhelupur, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

This temple is dedicated to Goddess Shakti/Amman and also enshrines other deities such as Goddess Bhadra Kali, Tantrik Kali, Chand Bhairava, Rudra Bhairava, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati.

Built in the Nagara (North Indian) architectural style by Rani Bhavani of Bengal, Durga Kund Mandir stands as a living heritage temple and continues to attract devotees and pilgrims throughout the year.

The temple is open daily from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, making it convenient for devotees seeking darshan at various times. Free darshan is available to all visitors.

The best times to visit are during the early morning hours (5–8 AM), at evening aarti, in the winter months (November to February), or during the vibrant festival season.

Major festivals celebrated here include Navratri and Dussehra in October-November, as well as Magha and Phalguna festivals in the early months of the year. Poojas and rituals at Durga Kund Mandir are conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi.

The Morning Aarti takes place at 5:30 AM, while the Evening Aarti is held at 7:00 PM, both offering a spiritually uplifting experience. Devotees often offer flowers, sweets, and red clothes (Chunri) to the deity, which are returned as prasadam.

Food donations are especially common during festivals like Navratri. When visiting, men are encouraged to wear conservative attire such as long pants, dhotis, or kurtas, while women are recommended to dress modestly in sarees, salwar kameez, or long skirts.

Photography is not permitted inside the main sanctum, but photos can be taken in the outer compound with permission. Cameras are allowed within the complex, and mobile phones should be kept on silent. Reaching Durga Kund Mandir is convenient from various parts of Varanasi.

From Varanasi Junction (BSB/Cantt) Railway Station, it is 6–8 km away and accessible by auto-rickshaw, e-rickshaw, or taxi. Banaras Railway Station (BSBS - Manduadih) is about 4–6 km away, while Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (VNS) is approximately 25–30 km from the temple.

Parking is limited due to the narrow streets, so it is advisable to use local transport. Accommodation options are plentiful in the Bhelupur and Lanka areas, with hotels, guesthouses, and dharamshalas available for pilgrims.

Nearby attractions include Durga Kund, Shri Satyanarayan Tulsi Manas Temple, Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, Assi Ghat, Banaras Hindu University (BHU/New Vishwanath Temple), and Dashashwamedh Ghat, making this temple a central point for spiritual exploration in Varanasi.
