About

Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, also known locally as Sankat Mochan Mandir or the Monkey Temple, is a revered pilgrimage centre situated on the banks of the river in the Saket Nagar, Durgakund, and Bhelupur areas of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

This ancient temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Hanuman, with shrines for Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lakshman also present within its premises. The temple’s architecture is a blend of mixed and renovated styles, reflecting its evolution over time.

Originally founded by the poet-saint Tulsidas in the 16th century, the current structure was built by Swami Karpatri ji Maharaj in the early 20th century, and today it stands as a living heritage temple in the spiritual heart of Varanasi.

Devotees and visitors can experience free darshan at Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple. The temple is open daily from 4:30 AM to 12:00 PM and from 3:00 PM to 10:30 PM, with extended hours until midnight on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

The best times to visit are during the morning hours between 8 AM and 12 PM, evening aarti, winter months (November to February), weekdays for a less crowded experience, and during the festival season.

The temple observes a respectful dress code for both men and women, requiring conservative attire that covers shoulders and knees.

A highlight of the temple’s spiritual offerings are the daily poojas, including the Morning Aarti at 4:30 AM, Evening Aarti at 8:00 PM, and Night Aarti at 10:00 PM, conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi.

During April, the temple celebrates Hanuman Jayanti and the Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh, drawing large numbers of devotees and music lovers. Reaching the temple is convenient from major transport hubs in Varanasi.

From Varanasi Junction (BSB), it is a 6–8 km journey by auto, e-rickshaw, or cab towards Lanka or Bhelupur, followed by a short walk. Assi Ghat is just 1.5–2 km away, accessible by foot or auto.

The Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport is approximately 25–30 km from the temple, with prepaid taxis available. Paid parking is available near the temple, though space is limited due to narrow roads, and security measures include metal detectors and frisking.

Photography is prohibited inside the main temple area, with cameras and mobile phones not permitted in the inner sanctum. Devotees receive besan ke laddoo as prasad, and large-scale annadanam may be organized during festivals.

Accommodation is plentiful in the surrounding Lanka, Bhelupur, and Assi Ghat areas, ranging from budget guesthouses to luxury hotels.

Nearby attractions include Shri Satyanarayan Tulsi Manas Temple, Durga Mata Mandir, Assi Ghat, Banaras Hindu University & New Vishwanath Temple, ISKCON Varanasi, and Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple. For more information, visit the official website or contact the temple directly.
