About

Mrityunjay Mahadev Temple, also known locally as Maha Mrityunjay Mandir or Mrityunjay Mahadev Mandir, is a revered ancient temple and pilgrimage centre dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Situated in Daranagar, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, this temple is a significant spiritual destination for devotees seeking darshan and blessings from Lord Shiva and other deities such as Vidhakaleshwar, Mahakaleshwar, Hustipadeshwar, Nagageshwar, and Dakshaihwar.

The temple is open daily from 4:00 AM to 12:00 AM, making it accessible for early morning and late-night worshippers.

The best time to visit is during the early morning hours (5–8 AM), in the morning (8 AM–12 PM), during the festival season, in winter (November to February), or during the annual brahmotsavam.

The temple observes a modest dress code for both men and women, though there is no strict formal requirement. Devotees can participate in free darshan and a variety of poojas.

Notable rituals include the Mahamrityunjay Rudrabhishek evam Aarogya Jeevan Puja, Rudrabhishek Puja (₹5100), and Shiv Bilvarchan Puja (₹1900). Daily aartis are conducted at specific times: Partha/Morning Aarti at 5:30 AM, Sandhya/Evening Aarti at 6:30 PM, and Rathri/Night Aarti at 11:30 PM.

Poojas are performed in Sanskrit and Hindi, catering to a wide range of devotees. The temple comes alive during major festivals such as Maha Shivaratri (February-March), Shravan Maas (July-August), and Dev Deepawali (November).

During these times, devotees may also receive prasadam, which typically includes flowers, sacred water from the temple well, and sweets. While there is no daily free annadanam, food is often distributed during festivals. Reaching Mrityunjay Mahadev Temple is straightforward.

From Varanasi Junction (BSB, 5 km), Varanasi City (BCY, 3 km), or Banaras (BSBS, 10 km) railway stations, visitors can hire an e-rickshaw or auto-rickshaw towards Daranagar or Kotwali/Bisheshwarganj.

After being dropped near the Kotwali police station, a short walk of 200-300 meters through narrow lanes leads to the temple. The nearest airport is Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (VNS), 25 km away.

Please note there is no private car parking at the site; parking is available at Maidagin, from where visitors can walk or take a rickshaw. The temple is not wheelchair accessible due to the narrow lanes.

For accommodation, pilgrims can choose from various dharamshalas and guesthouses near Kotwali and Bisheshwarganj, mid-range hotels near Godowlia crossing or Nai Sarak, and luxury hotels near Mall Road or the Cantonment area.

Nearby attractions include Shri Kaal Bhairav Temple, Manikarnika Ghat, Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Dashashwamedh Ghat, Adi Keshav Ghat, and Ramnagar Fort.

Photography inside the main sanctum is generally restricted, and electronic devices are prohibited in some interior areas, ensuring a peaceful and sacred atmosphere for worship.
