About

Dwadash Aditya Temple, also known as Dwadash Aditya Yatra or the 12 Aditya Temples, is a revered ancient temple complex situated in the Lalita Ghat, Ghasi Tola, and Dashashwamedh Ghat area of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

This pilgrimage centre stands out for its unique dedication to Surya, the Sun God, worshipped here in twelve distinct forms: Lolarkaditya, Uttararkaditya, Sambaditya, Draupadaditya, Mayukhaditya, Khakholakaditya, Arunaditya, Vriddhaditya, Keshavaditya, Vimaladitya, Gangaditya, and Yamaditya.

The temple’s riverbank location along the sacred Ganga enhances its spiritual ambiance and draws devotees seeking darshan and blessings. The Dwadash Aditya Temple is recognized as a living heritage temple managed by a panchayat or local trust.

While the exact historical period of the temple remains unknown or disputed, its significance as a pilgrimage destination is well established. The temple’s architecture does not conform to a single style, reflecting the diverse traditions of Varanasi’s ancient temple culture.

Devotees can visit the temple for free darshan, with opening hours from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The best time to visit is in the morning between 8 AM and 12 PM, especially during the winter months from November to February.

Aarti is performed daily at 8:00 AM, and rituals are conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi. The temple is especially vibrant during Sankranti and other solar festivals, celebrated throughout the year. Traditional, modest clothing is recommended for both men and women visiting the temple.

Photography and the use of mobile phones or electronics are strictly prohibited near the sanctum area, ensuring a serene and respectful environment for worship. Reaching the Dwadash Aditya Temple involves navigating the narrow lanes of Varanasi’s old city.

Visitors should first arrive at Godowlia Crossing, then take a cycle rickshaw or walk toward Trilochan Ghat or Sankatha Ghat. Alternatively, boat rides from Assi Ghat or Dashashwamedh Ghat provide scenic access to some of the Aditya temples.

There is no dedicated parking; vehicles must be parked outside the ghat area. For accommodation, numerous guesthouses and hotels are available in Ghasi Tola, Bengali Tola, Bangali Tola, and near Dashashwamedh and Assi Ghat, catering to a range of budgets.

The temple’s proximity to major attractions like Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Dashashwamedh Ghat, and Lolarka Aditya Temple makes it an essential stop for pilgrims exploring Varanasi’s spiritual landscape. For more information, visitors can refer to the official website.
