About

Kalbhairav Temple, also known locally as Kaal Bhairav Mandir and revered as the Kotwal of Kashi, is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in his fierce Kalbhairav form.

Located in the Visheshwarganj area of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, this temple stands as a significant pilgrimage centre and village temple, drawing devotees from across India who seek darshan and blessings from the guardian deity of the holy city.

The temple showcases the Nagara (North Indian) style of architecture and holds the distinction of being a living heritage temple. Its current structure was rebuilt during the Maratha period by Bajirao Peshwa in 1715, adding to its historical and spiritual significance.

The temple is especially vibrant during major festivals such as Mahashivratri (February/March) and Bhairav Ashtami, also known as Kalbhairav Jayanti (November/December), when special poojas and annadanam are organized, and the temple sees a surge of pilgrims.

Kalbhairav Temple opens its doors daily from 5:00 AM to 1:30 PM and again from 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM. The best time to visit is early morning between 5:00 and 8:00 AM, during evening aarti, in the winter months from November to February, or on weekdays when the temple is less crowded.

Devotees are encouraged to wear traditional, modest clothing as a mark of respect. Darshan at the Kalbhairav Temple is free for all visitors.

The temple conducts several poojas, including Mangala Aarti at 4:00 AM, Regular Mangala Aarti at 5:00 AM, and Bhog Aarti Seva at 1:30 PM, with rituals performed in Sanskrit and Hindi.

Prasadam offerings are unique, featuring black sesame seeds, mustard oil, and alcohol, and bhog is distributed to devotees. Annadanam is organized on special occasions like Bhairav Ashtami. Reaching Kalbhairav Temple is convenient from major transport hubs.

Varanasi Junction (BSB/Cantt) and Kashi Railway Station are both about 3.5 km away, while Banaras Station (BSBS/Manduadih) is 6.5 km distant. Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport is approximately 27.5 km from the temple.

From these points, auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws, and taxis are available to Maidagin Crossing, from where visitors can walk or take a rickshaw through the narrow lanes to the temple. Please note there is no onsite parking; parking is available at Lahurabir or Godowlia Crossing.

Photography is not allowed inside the main temple complex, preserving the sanctity of the space. For accommodation, luxury hotels like Taj Ganges and Nadesar Palace are within 3-4 km, while mid-range and budget options are available near Maidagin, Godowlia, and Bengali Tola.

Ghat-side hotels near Dashashwamedh Ghat (1-1.5 km) offer convenient stays for pilgrims.

Nearby attractions include Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Manikarnika Ghat, Dashashwamedh Ghat, Shri Kapal Bhairav (Laat Bhairav), Annapurna Devi Temple, and Assi Ghat, all within a short distance, making Kalbhairav Temple an essential stop in the sacred city of Varanasi.
