Chokkanathaswamy Temple Domlur

Situated in the Domlur area of Bengaluru, Karnataka, this temple stands as a living heritage site with a rich history dating back to the Chola period.

The temple was originally built by the Chola kings and later maintained by the Hoysala and Vijayanagara empires, making it an important landmark for devotees and history enthusiasts alike.

The temple’s architecture is a classic example of Dravidian style, featuring intricate stone carvings and a serene ambience. Besides the primary deity, Lord Vishnu, the temple also houses shrines for Sridevi and Bhudevi.

Devotees can participate in various poojas, including the Daily Homam from 6:30 AM to 7:30 AM, Abhisheka, and Aarti performed at 7:30 AM and 6:30 PM. Special rituals such as Mahamangalarathi on Saturdays and Thiruppavai during the Margazhi month (at 5:30 AM) are also observed.

Poojas are conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit, preserving the traditional practices of the temple. Darshan at Chokkanathaswamy Temple is free for all visitors.

The temple timings are as follows: Monday to Friday from 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM and 5:45 PM to 8:30 PM; Wednesday mornings extend till 11:30 AM; Saturdays from 6:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 5:45 PM to 9:00 PM.

The best time to visit is early morning between 5 and 8 AM, especially during the winter months from November to February.

The temple celebrates several festivals, including Vaikuntha Ekadashi (December-January), Brahmotsavam, Rama Navami, Navarathri, Krishna Janmashtami, and Puratasi Saturdays (mid-September to mid-October).

On Saturdays, free annadanam (food) is served after Thirumanjanam, feeding around 400 devotees, and Theertham (holy water) is offered daily.

Visitors are advised to follow the dress code: men should wear traditional or formal attire (shorts and jeans are not permitted), while women are recommended to wear traditional or formal clothing (short dresses are not allowed).

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum but is allowed for the temple’s exterior and stone carvings.

Reaching the temple is convenient: take a BMTC bus toward Domlur or Sony World Signal, or use the Metro Purple Line to Indiranagar or Swami Vivekananda Road station, followed by a short auto-rickshaw ride. Taxis can be directed to ‘Chokkanathaswamy Temple Domlur’ on 5th Main Road.
