Chennakeshava Temple Belur

This magnificent temple, dedicated primarily to Lord Vishnu, stands as an exceptional example of Hoysala architecture and is recognized as a royal temple, an ASI protected monument, and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Built during the Chola period by Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana, the temple continues to be a living heritage site, attracting devotees and tourists alike.

The temple complex houses not only the main deity, Lord Vishnu, but also sanctums for other revered deities such as Andal, Soumyanayaki (Lakshmi), Kappe Chennigaraya, and Ganapathi. The temple is open daily from 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM, making it convenient for devotees to plan their darshan.

Free darshan is available for all visitors, and there is no strict dress code, although modest clothing is required for both men and women.

Chennakeshava Temple offers a variety of poojas in Kannada, including Panchamrutha Abhisheka, Sahasranama Archane, Kumkumarchane, Sankasta Chouthi Pooje, and several food offerings such as Nimbhehannina Chithranna Seva (lemon rice), Puliyogare (tamarind rice), curd rice, Sakkre Pongal, Ravekshira (Kesari bath), and Uppu Pongal.

Prices for these rituals and offerings are clearly specified, allowing devotees to choose according to their preference. Prasadam is distributed after daily poojas, and during the Chennakeshava Rathotsava (Chariot Festival) held in March-April, devotees also receive free food or drinks.

The best time to visit the temple is during winter (November to February), early mornings between 5 and 8 AM, or on weekdays when the temple is less crowded. Photography is permitted within the temple complex and exterior, with a nominal camera fee, but is restricted inside the main inner sanctum.

Reaching Chennakeshava Temple is convenient from major cities. From Bangalore, take NH75 towards Hassan and then SH21/NH373 to Belur. From Hassan, local buses or taxis cover the 35-40 km distance. Mangalore visitors can take NH73 via Sakleshpur.

The nearest railway stations are Hassan Junction (40 km) and Chikmagalur (23 km), while the closest airports are Mangaluru International Airport (160 km) and Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (220 km). Ample parking is available near the entrance for a small fee.
