About

Chausath Yogini Temple Mitawali, also known locally as Ekattarso Mahadeva Temple or Ekottarso Mahadev Mandir, is a remarkable ancient temple situated atop Mitawali Hill in the village of Mitaoli, Morena district, Madhya Pradesh.

This ASI-protected monument is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, with sanctums also honoring 64 Yoginis and Goddess Devi, making it a significant pilgrimage destination for devotees seeking darshan and spiritual solace.

The temple is renowned for its unique architectural style and circular design, which sets it apart from other hill temples in the region. Visitors can experience the serene ambiance and panoramic views after climbing approximately 100 stone steps from the base of Mitawali Hill.

The climb, while moderately challenging, is rewarded by the tranquil setting and the temple’s spiritual atmosphere. Chausath Yogini Temple welcomes devotees and tourists daily from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM, aligning with sunrise and sunset.

The best time to visit is during the early morning hours between 5 and 12 AM, especially in the winter months from November to February, when the weather is pleasant for both the climb and exploration. There is no entry fee, and darshan is free for all visitors.

Poojas and rituals are conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi, catering to the spiritual needs of pilgrims. The temple observes Maha Shivaratri, celebrated in February or March, drawing devotees for special prayers and rituals.

For those planning a visit, modest and respectful attire is recommended—trousers or jeans with shirts for men, and salwar kameez, sarees, kurtis, or jeans for women. While there is basic unpaved parking available at the hill’s base, the site is not wheelchair accessible due to the steps.

Reaching Chausath Yogini Temple is convenient via Gwalior or Morena, both accessible by train or flight. From Gwalior (40–55 km) or Morena (30–35 km), visitors can hire a taxi, auto-rickshaw, or take a local bus to Padaoli or Mitawali village.

The nearest railway stations include Gohad Road (18 km), Malanpur (20 km), Morena (32 km), and Gwalior Junction (35 km). The closest airports are Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Airport in Gwalior (30 km) and Agra Airport (140 km).

Accommodation options are available in Morena and Gwalior, with local homestays like Suneeta Homestay in Mitawali and hotels such as Indralok Palace Hotel & Resort, Hotel Radiant Inn, and Hotel Radhika Palace in Morena. Gwalior offers a wide range of hotels for every budget.

While the temple does not provide formal prasadam or annadanam, visitors are advised to bring their own water and snacks.

Nearby attractions include Garhi Padavali (4 km), Bateshwar Group of Temples (7 km), Kakanmath Temple (22 km), and Shri Shanichara Temple (12 km), making Mitawali an excellent base for exploring the spiritual and historical heritage of the region. Photography is permitted for personal use, though commercial shoots or drone usage may require prior permission.
