Chateswar Temple

Situated in Kishinapur village near Salipur in the Cuttack district of Odisha, this temple stands as a remarkable example of Kalinga architecture and holds significant spiritual and historical value for devotees and visitors alike.

The temple is believed to have been constructed during the Chola period by Vishnu, a royal minister under Eastern Ganga monarch Ananga Bhima Deva III, and is currently managed by a local panchayat or trust.

The temple complex is revered not only for its main deity, Lord Shiva, but also houses shrines for other deities including Vishnu, Chamunda, Surya, Nandi, and even a miniature image of Buddha.

The temple observes a modest dress code: men are expected to wear traditional or modest casual attire such as full-length trousers or dhotis with a clean shirt or kurta, while women should opt for sarees, salwar kameez, or long kurtas with leggings.

Devotees can participate in various poojas, including Abhisheka and Shodasha Upachara Puja. Rudrabhisheka is especially significant on Mondays and Sankranti. Rituals are conducted in Sanskrit and Odia.

Major festivals celebrated here include Maha Shivaratri (February–March), Dola Purnima (March), Kartik Purnima (November), Margashirsha Purnima (December), and Navaratra Puja (September–October and March–April).

During these occasions, traditional prasadam such as fruits, sweets, puffed rice, and charanamrit is distributed, and community feasts are organized. To reach Chateswar Temple, visitors can arrive at Cuttack or Bhubaneswar by air, train, or road.

From Cuttack city center, local transport such as auto-rickshaws, cabs, or state buses take you to Salipur, about 20–25 km away. From Salipur, local auto-rickshaws or bikes are available to Kishinapur village.
