About

Charchika Temple Banki, also known locally as Banki Charchika Temple or Maa Charchika Mandir, is a revered Shakti Peetha situated atop Ruchika Parvat in Banki, Cuttack district, Odisha.

This ancient temple, dedicated to Goddess Shakti (Amman), stands as a significant pilgrimage centre, drawing devotees and spiritual seekers from across the region.

The temple’s unique location on a hillock along the riverbank enhances its tranquil and scenic atmosphere, making it a notable destination for those seeking spiritual solace and natural beauty.

The temple is built in the traditional Kalinga architectural style, reflecting the cultural heritage of Odisha. While the idol of the presiding deity is believed to date back to the Bhaumakara dynasty (9th–10th century), the present structure was reconstructed in the 19th century.

The temple holds state heritage status, underscoring its cultural and historical importance in the region. Charchika Temple Banki is open for darshan from 5:00 AM to 2:30 PM and again from 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM, allowing devotees ample opportunity to seek blessings.

The best time to visit is early morning between 5–8 AM, during the winter months from November to February, or in the vibrant festival season.

Major festivals celebrated here include Durga Puja/Navaratri and Kumar Purnima in October, as well as Maha Navami/Dasahara in September-October, when the temple comes alive with rituals and community gatherings. Devotees can participate in free darshan, with poojas conducted in Sanskrit and Odia.

Traditional dry and sweet bhog such as coconut, sweets, and puffed rice are offered as prasadam, and community annadanam is organized during major festivals.

Visitors are expected to follow a dress code: men should wear traditional or modest casual attire, while women are encouraged to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or modest kurtis.

Reaching Charchika Temple is convenient from Bhubaneswar (50–60 km) via NH-16 or from Cuttack (about 45 km) via the Naraj-Mundali bridge. The nearest railway stations are Cuttack Junction (48 km) and Bhubaneswar Railway Station (55 km), with Biju Patnaik International Airport located 60 km away.

Local transport from the Banki bus stand includes autos and cycle-rickshaws to the temple gates. Adequate open parking is available near the base of Ruchika hillock, though the temple is accessible only by steps and lacks wheelchair ramps.

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum, but casual photography of the outer temple is generally allowed except during rituals.

For accommodation, visitors can choose from options like SSB Kingdom Waterpark & Resort, OYO Flagship Shanti Guest House, SN Eco Resort and Waterpark, and Hotel Kanchan Plaza.

Nearby attractions include Ansupa Lake, Devidwara, Pandava Bakhara (Pathapur), and Maa Bhattarika Temple (Badamba), making Banki Charchika Temple a fulfilling destination for pilgrims and tourists alike. For further inquiries, the temple can be contacted at +919937993700.
