Bhagandeshwara Temple Bhagamandala

This ancient temple, with its origins tracing back to the Chola period, stands as a living heritage site and has been rebuilt by the Haleri Kings of Kodagu, notably King Dodda Vira Rajendra.

The temple is beautifully set on the riverbank, just 500 meters from the main Bhagamandala bus stop, making it easily accessible for pilgrims and visitors. The primary deity worshipped here is Lord Shiva, with separate shrines dedicated to Lord Subramanya, Lord Mahavishnu, and Lord Ganapathi.

The temple’s architecture is distinctly Kerala style, featuring intricate wooden work and sloping tiled roofs that harmonize with the lush landscape of the Western Ghats.

Bhagandeshwara Temple is particularly significant for those seeking darshan and spiritual solace at the confluence of sacred rivers. Darshan at Bhagandeshwara Temple is free for all devotees. The temple is open daily from 6:30 AM to 1:30 PM and again from 3:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

The best time to visit is during the winter months (November to February), the festival season, early mornings between 5 and 8 AM, or during the evening aarti for a serene spiritual experience.

The temple observes a traditional dress code: men are encouraged to wear mundu or dhoti, while clean, modest full-length western wear is permitted; women are advised to wear saree, salwar kameez, or kurta with dupatta, with modest western attire also allowed.

Devotees can participate in various poojas, including Abhisheka (6:30 AM – 7:00 AM, ₹20), Rudrabhisheka (8:15 AM – 9:30 AM, ₹100), Maha Mangala Aarti in the morning (11:45 AM – 12:30 PM) and evening (7:30 PM – 8:30 PM), and Ganapathi Pooja (7:15 PM – 7:30 PM).

Rituals are conducted in Kannada and Sanskrit. Major festivals celebrated here include Tula Sankramana/Kaveri Sankaramana in October, Maha Shivaratri in February-March, Navaratri/Dussehra in September-October, and the Hutari Festival in October-November.

Pilgrims can reach the temple by traveling to Madikeri, then taking the Madikeri-Talakaveri Road for 36 km to Bhagamandala. The nearest railway stations are Subrahmanya Road (42.4 km), Mysuru Junction (120 km), Hassan (142 km), and Mangaluru Central/Junction (133 km).

Kannur International Airport is the closest at 53 km, with additional options at Mangaluru, Mysuru, and Bengaluru. Spacious parking is available near the temple and Triveni Sangama, with nominal fees.

While the outer complex is accessible, there are no dedicated wheelchair ramps for the inner sanctum. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main shrines but allowed in the outer courtyards.

Daily free mass lunch (rice and sambar) is served to all pilgrims between 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM, and dry prasad items are available for a nominal cost.
