Barunei Temple Khordha

Perched atop the scenic Barunei Hill, this pilgrimage centre is dedicated to Goddess Shakti (Amman) as the primary deity, with Maa Karunei also worshipped within the complex.

The temple is renowned for its Kalinga architectural style and holds state heritage status, reflecting its historical and spiritual significance in the region. Devotees can visit Barunei Temple daily between 6:30 AM and 8:00 PM.

The best time to visit is during the winter months from November to February, especially in the early morning hours (5–8 AM), during the morning (8 AM–12 PM), or at evening aarti time. The temple is particularly vibrant during the festival season, when special rituals and celebrations take place.

The temple offers free darshan to all visitors. Daily poojas include the Nitha & Mangala Alati performed in the early morning, Abhisek & Shodasha Upachara Puja, and the Sandhya Alati in the evening. Special personal pujas such as coconut offerings, floral garlands, and archana can also be arranged.

Rituals are conducted in Sanskrit, maintaining the temple’s traditional spiritual atmosphere. The signature prasadam is traditional Kheeri (rice pudding) accompanied by dry sweets and fruits, while annadanam is organized during major festivals.

Barunei Temple is a focal point for several important festivals, including Chaitra Mela/Ghanta Jatra in March–April, Durga Puja/Dussehra in September–October, Raja Sankranti in June, and Deepavali & Kumar Purnima in October–November.

These occasions draw large numbers of devotees and pilgrims from across Odisha and beyond. To reach Barunei Temple, pilgrims can arrive at Bhubaneswar via the airport or major train stations, or at Khurda Road Junction or Khordha Town railway stations (5 km and 12 km away, respectively).

From Khordha, follow NH-16 and Barunei Temple Road to the base of Barunei Hill, where designated parking is available for a nominal fee. Visitors must climb approximately 200 stone steps to reach the main shrine, as the temple is not wheelchair accessible.

Traditional attire is expected: men should wear full-length trousers, dhoti, shirts, or kurtas, while women are advised to dress in sarees, salwar kameez, or other modest ethnic wear.

Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside the main temple premises, and mobile phones or cameras must be deposited at the entrance lockers.
