Kalijai Temple Chilika

Situated on Kalijai Island in the heart of Chilika Lake, near Barkul in Khordha district, Odisha, this temple is a unique blend of spiritual significance and natural beauty.

The temple stands as a prominent seaside and riverbank temple, drawing devotees and visitors who seek blessings and wish to experience the tranquil atmosphere of the island.

Built in 1717 CE by Sri Jagannath Mansingh, Raja of Bankad (Banapur), Kalijai Temple is a living heritage temple and an excellent example of Kalinga architecture. The temple’s location on an island in Chilika Lake makes the journey itself a memorable part of the pilgrimage.

To reach the temple, pilgrims must first arrive at Barkul or Balugaon on the banks of Chilika Lake. From there, motorboats or ferries are available at the local jetties, offering a scenic 30-45 minute ride across the lake to Kalijai Island.

Upon arrival, a short walk from the island jetty leads directly to the temple complex. The temple is open daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, allowing devotees ample time for darshan and participation in rituals. Free darshan is available to all visitors.

Daily aarti and personal puja (santarpa/archana) are performed in Odia, Sanskrit, Hindi, and English, making the spiritual experience accessible to a wide range of devotees.

The best time to visit Kalijai Temple is during the winter months from November to February, especially in the early morning hours between 5 and 8 AM, when the lake and island are at their most serene.

Major festivals celebrated at the temple include Makar Sankranti (Kalijai Mela) in January, Navaratri/Dussehra in September-October, and Kali Puja/Diwali in October-November. During these times, the temple comes alive with special rituals and free food distribution for devotees.

Prasadam typically consists of sweet sugar or jaggery offerings, puffed rice, fruits, and dry sweets. Visitors are advised to follow the temple’s dress code: men should wear traditional or modest casual attire, while women are encouraged to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or modest kurtis.

Photography is permitted around the island and outer courtyards, but is restricted inside the inner sanctum. Parking is available at the mainland jetties, and while basic wheelchair accessibility exists on the island, boat transfers may be challenging for those with severe mobility issues. Kalijai Temple Chilika offers a spiritually enriching experience amidst the breathtaking landscape of Chilika Lake.
