About

Bade Hanuman Temple in Prayagraj, also locally known as Lete Hanuman Mandir, Fort Hanuman, Dam Hanuman, and Sankatmochan Hanuman Temple, stands as a revered pilgrimage centre on the banks of the river in Daraganj, near the historic Allahabad Fort along Kila Ghat Road.

This ancient temple, built in the Nagara (North Indian) architectural style, is dedicated primarily to Lord Hanuman.

The temple also houses shrines for Shiva-Parvati, Ganesh, Bhairav, Durga, Kali, and Navgrah, making it a significant spiritual destination for devotees seeking blessings from multiple deities. The temple is renowned for its unique underground sanctum, which is accessible via steep stairs.

While the exact historical period of the temple is unknown or disputed, it is believed that the idol was brought by a king of Kannauj and established by Mahatma Balagiri. Bade Hanuman Temple is recognized as a living heritage temple and is managed by a local panchayat or trust.

Devotees can participate in daily poojas such as the Mangal Aarti at 5:00 AM and the Shringar Aarti in the evening. Poojas are conducted in Hindi and Sanskrit, allowing pilgrims from various regions to connect with the rituals.

The temple offers free darshan to all visitors, and the recommended dress code is modest clothing, with traditional attire like Dhoti/Kurta for men and Saree for women encouraged during special poojas. The temple is open for darshan from 5:00 AM to 2:00 PM and again from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

The best time to visit is early morning or during the winter months (November to February), as well as on weekdays for a less crowded experience.

Festival seasons, especially Bada Mangal in May-June, Hanuman Jayanti in April, and the Kumbh/Magh Mela in January-February, attract large numbers of devotees. Reaching the temple is convenient from various parts of Prayagraj.

From Prayagraj Junction railway station (7 km away), visitors can take an auto-rickshaw, e-rickshaw, or taxi towards the Sangam/Daraganj area. Civil Lines Bus Stand is about 5-6 km away, and local buses or taxis are available.

E-rickshaws are commonly used for the last stretch to the temple entrance. The nearest airports are Prayagraj Airport (12 km), Varanasi Airport (150 km), and Lucknow Airport (200 km).

Accommodation options such as hotels, guesthouses, dharmashalas, and ashrams are available in Daraganj, Arail, and Civil Lines within a 1–6 km radius. Nearby attractions include Triveni Sangam (1 km), Akbar Fort (0.5 km), Patalpuri Temple (1 km), Anand Bhavan (6 km), and Allahabad Museum (6 km).

Devotees can partake in prasadam offerings like ladoos, pedas, fruits, and sindoor, with large-scale bhandaras organized during Bada Mangal and special occasions. Photography is allowed in the outer courtyard but prohibited inside the main sanctum, and mobiles are not permitted in the inner area.

Limited roadside parking is available, but it can be crowded during festivals, and the temple is not fully wheelchair accessible due to the stairs. For more details, visitors can refer to the official website or contact the temple directly.
