About

Akshayvat Temple, also known as Akshayavat or the Akshayavat (Patalpuri) Temple, is a revered ancient temple and pilgrimage centre located inside the historic Allahabad Fort, near the sacred Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

This temple is especially significant for devotees of Lord Vishnu, who is the primary deity worshipped here, along with Lord Rama and Sita. The temple is uniquely situated on the riverbank, making it a tranquil spot for spiritual seekers and pilgrims.

The Akshayvat Temple is renowned for its association with the Immortal Banyan Tree, which holds a special place in the hearts of devotees.

The temple complex falls under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), and the fort itself was built by Mughal Emperor Akbar, adding a layer of historical importance to the site.

The exact historical period of the temple is unknown or disputed, but its spiritual significance endures. Darshan at Akshayvat Temple is available to all, with free entry for devotees.

The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM, and the best time to visit is during the winter months (November to February), early mornings between 5 and 8 AM, or during the festival season.

Pilgrims are advised to wear traditional, respectful attire that covers shoulders and knees for both men and women. One of the key rituals performed at the temple is Tarpan, a water offering and ancestor worship ceremony, conducted in Hindi and Sanskrit.

While there is no standardized prasadam, devotees often offer flowers, leaves, and water. Annadanam (community meals) is organized by ashrams and akharas during major festivals like Magh Mela and Kumbh Mela, which are celebrated with great fervor.

The Kumbh Mela is held every 12 years, Ardh Kumbh Mela every 6 years, and Magh Mela annually in January–February, drawing thousands of pilgrims.

To reach Akshayvat Temple, visitors should arrive in Prayagraj city and use local transport such as autos, taxis, or buses towards Sangam or Allahabad Fort.

Entry is via the north side of the fort near Triveni Sangam/Kila Ghat, with a security check required for access to the Patalpuri Temple and Akshayvat. The nearest railway stations are Prayagraj Junction (7 km), Prayagraj Sangam Station (2 km), and Daraaganj Station (3 km).

Prayagraj Airport (Bamrauli) is 20 km away, while Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi is 125 km from the temple. Accommodation options include hotels and guesthouses in Civil Lines and the city area (4-5 km away), as well as ashrams and dharamshalas near Daraganj and Sangam.

Guesthouses are also available in the Arail area across the river. Limited parking is available outside the fort, so public transport is recommended. Wheelchair and stroller accessibility can be challenging but is manageable for regular visitors.

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the Patalpuri Temple and around the Akshayvat tree.

Nearby attractions include Triveni Sangam, Shri Bade Hanuman Ji Mandir, Akbar Fort, Saraswati Ghat, Khusro Bagh, Anand Bhawan Museum, and ISKCON Temple, making Akshayvat Temple a central part of any spiritual journey to Prayagraj.
