Ambalpadi Mahakali Janardhana Temple

Renowned for its Kerala-style architecture and historical roots dating back to the Vijayanagara period, the temple holds a special place among devotees seeking darshan and spiritual solace in the region.

The temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Vishnu, worshipped here as Janardhana, and also enshrines Goddess Mahakali as a principal deity. Other deities worshipped include Lord Hanuman, Saraswati Durga, and Kumari Durga, making the temple a vibrant centre of diverse Hindu traditions.

The Janardhana section was established by Sreedharan Nidambur in 1571 CE, while the Mahakali shrine was developed in the 16th century, reflecting the temple’s rich heritage and living traditions.

Ambalpadi Mahakali Janardhana Temple is open for darshan and poojas from Monday to Thursday and on weekends between 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM, and again from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM. On Fridays, devotees can visit continuously from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM without an afternoon break.

Free darshan is available for all visitors. The best time to visit is during the morning hours (8 AM–12 PM), in the winter months from November to February, on weekdays for a less crowded experience, or during the vibrant festival season, especially the annual brahmotsavam.

The temple offers a variety of poojas, including Vehicle Pooja (Vahana Pooja), Kunkumarchane, Panchamrutha Abhisheka, Theertha Snana & Hoovina Pooje, Raksha Yantra, and Saptashati Parayana & Chandika Homa. The unique Friday Oracle (Pathri) is held every Friday from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Rituals are performed in both Sanskrit and Kannada, allowing devotees from different backgrounds to participate. Major festivals celebrated here include Navaratri (Sharada Navaratri) in September-October, the Annual Car Festival (Rathothsava) in February, and Ashadha Mari Pooja in July–August.

Free afternoon lunch prasadam (oota) is served to all devotees, especially on Fridays, along with daily distribution of kumkum, holy water, and blessed flowers.

Reaching the temple is convenient: arrive in Udupi by bus, car, or train, then head west from the Udupi KSRTC/City Bus Stand towards Ambalpady, about 3 km away. Local buses and auto-rickshaws are readily available. The temple is accessible, with ample parking and wheelchair-friendly facilities.
