Yamunotri Temple

This ancient hill temple, built in the Nagara (North Indian) architectural style, is dedicated primarily to Goddess Shakti (Amman), with Goddess Ganga and the sacred Divya Shila also worshipped here.

As a significant destination for devotees and spiritual seekers, Yamunotri Temple holds the status of a state heritage site and is an essential part of the Char Dham Yatra in northern India.

The temple’s darshan timings are seasonal, typically open from April/May to October/November, with daily hours from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Early morning visits between 5–8 AM are considered ideal, and the temple is especially vibrant during festival seasons and the summer and winter months. For darshan, only free entry is available, and rituals are conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi.

The daily pooja schedule includes Morning Darshan & Opening (6:00 AM – 2:00 PM), Bhog/Midday Aarti (12:00 PM – 12:30 PM), and Evening Darshan & Shayan Aarti (3:00 PM – 8:00 PM, with aarti around 6:30–7:00 PM). Special VIP or custom poojas can be arranged on request.

Yamunotri Temple celebrates several important festivals, such as Akshaya Tritiya (April-May), Basant Panchami (January-February), Phool Dei (March), Janmashtami (August-September), Mata Murti Ka Mela (September), and Diwali & Yama Dwitiya/Bhai Dooj (October-November).

Pilgrims often participate in the unique tradition of cooking rice or potatoes in the Surya Kund hot springs as prasad. While the temple trust does not organize formal annadanam, free or community meals are available at ashrams and dharamshalas along the pilgrimage route.

To reach Yamunotri Temple, pilgrims typically arrive at Dehradun, Haridwar, or Rishikesh by train, bus, or flight. From there, a drive to Barkot (140–170 km from Rishikesh/Dehradun) is followed by a local jeep or cab ride to Janki Chatti (45 km from Barkot).

The final 6 km stretch is an uphill trek from Janki Chatti, which can be undertaken on foot, by pony, or palanquin. Parking is available at Janki Chatti, the last motorable point.

Nearby attractions include Surya Kund, Divya Shila, Kharsali (the winter seat of Goddess Yamuna), Saptarshi Kund, and Barkot. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum but allowed outside and in the surrounding areas from a respectful distance.
