Gangotri Temple

This ancient hill temple is dedicated primarily to Goddess Shakti (Amman) and is an important destination for devotees seeking spiritual solace and darshan in the Himalayas.

The temple is also home to shrines of other deities including Goddess Yamuna, Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Annapurna, Goddess Lakshmi, Sage Bhagiratha, Adi Shankaracharya, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesh, and Lord Hanuman, making it a significant site for worshippers of the divine feminine and other Hindu gods.

Constructed in the Nagara (North Indian) architectural style, Gangotri Temple stands as a living heritage temple, originally built by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa and later renovated by the Jaipur royal family under Maharaja Madho Singh II.

The temple is managed by a local panchayat trust and holds a special place among the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. Devotees can visit Gangotri Temple during its seasonal opening, typically from April/May to October/November. The temple timings are from 6:15 AM to 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM to 9:30 PM.

The best time to visit is during early morning hours, for the Mangala Aarti (6:00 AM - 7:00 AM), or in the evening for the Sandhya/Ganga Aarti (7:45 PM - 8:45 PM). Special darshan is available for a fee of INR 500, while free darshan is also offered.

Poojas such as Ganga Puja/Archana are conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi, with prices starting at INR 2499.

Gangotri Temple celebrates several festivals including Akshaya Tritiya (April-May), Ganga Dussehra (May-June), Bhagirath Jayanti (June-July), and Diwali/Bhai Dooj (October-November), attracting pilgrims from across India.

Prasadam includes sugary sweets, dry fruits, mishri, and holy Ganga Jal, while free or subsidized meals are available at local bhandaras and ashrams.

Reaching Gangotri is convenient via Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun, 250 km) or the railway stations at Rishikesh (234 km), Haridwar (265 km), and Dehradun (290 km). From these points, travelers proceed by road through Uttarkashi and Harsil.

Visitors should adhere to the temple’s dress code, which encourages traditional and modest attire for both men and women. Photography and use of electronic devices are strictly prohibited inside the temple complex, with cloakrooms provided for safekeeping.
