Virupaksha Temple Hampi

Situated on the banks of the river in Hampi Bazaar, Vijayanagara district, Karnataka, this temple stands as a living heritage site and is recognized as an ASI protected monument and part of the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of Hampi.

The temple's history is closely associated with the Vijayanagara period, with major expansions attributed to Lakkan Dandesha under King Deva Raya II of the Vijayanagara Empire.

The winter months from November to February and the festival season are considered the best times to visit.

A variety of traditional poojas are performed at the temple, including Panchamrut Abhishekam, Bilva Pathrarchana, Sahasranama Archana, Karpoora Aarti, Maha Rudraabhishekam, Bali Puja, Paduka Puja, Ekanta Seva, and Giri Pradakshina.

All rituals are conducted in Kannada, maintaining the temple's regional and cultural authenticity. Major festivals celebrated here include the Virupaksha Car Festival (Rathotsava) in February-March, Phala Puja/Betrothal in December, Maha Shivaratri, Diwali, and Hampi Utsav in January.

Reaching the temple is convenient, with Hospet Junction (13 km) and Kariganuru (18 km) as the nearest railway stations. Jindal Vijaynagar Airport is 38 km away, while Hubli and Bengaluru airports are also accessible.

Directions include reaching Hospet by train or bus, then taking local transport to Hampi Bazaar, followed by a short walk to the temple entrance. Parking is available in Hampi Bazaar, though vehicles are not permitted up to the temple entrance, and stone pathways may pose accessibility challenges.
