About

Varakkal Devi Temple, also known locally as Varakkal Sree Durga Devi Temple, Varakkal Temple, or Varakkal Amma shrine, is a revered ancient hill temple situated in the West Hill area of Kozhikode, Kerala.

Dedicated primarily to Goddess Shakti (Amman), this temple is a significant pilgrimage centre in the region, drawing devotees seeking the blessings of the Divine Mother.

The temple also houses sanctums for Lord Ganapathi, Lord Dakshinamoorthy, Lord Sree Ayyappan, and the Naga Devatas, making it a spiritually rich destination for worshippers.

The temple’s architecture reflects the traditional Kerala style, with a serene ambience that enhances the devotional experience.

Varakkal Devi Temple operates as a living heritage temple under the management of a local trust, and its history is mythologically attributed to Lord Parasurama, later revived by the Perumals and patronized by the Zamorins of Kozhikode.

Devotees can participate in a range of poojas and rituals, including Usha Pooja (6:30 AM–7:00 AM), Noon Pooja (10:00 AM), Deepa Aradhana at sunset, and Evening Pooja (7:00 PM).

Other important rituals include Mahanivedyam, Pushpanjali, Thrikalapooja, Padivilakku, Naivilakku, Swayamvara Pushpanjali, Santhana Gopala Pooja, Ganapathy Homam, and Thila Homam. Poojas are conducted in Malayalam and Sanskrit, maintaining the temple’s traditional ethos.

For darshan, visitors can choose from free darshan, special darshan, VIP darshan, and seeghra darshan options. The temple is open for darshan from 5:00 AM to 10:30 AM and again from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM.

The best times to visit are early mornings, during the morning hours, at evening aarti, in winter (November to February), or during the vibrant festival season.

Major festivals celebrated here include Vavu Bali (Bali Tharpanam) in July–August and October–November, Navarathri in September–October, and Vishu in April.

Traditional prasadam such as payasam and vada is distributed after rituals, and free community feasts (annadanam) are organized during major festivals.

Visitors are required to follow a strict dress code: men must wear traditional attire (dhoti/mundu) with the upper chest bare or covered with a traditional cloth, while women should wear sarees, langa-blouse, or salwar kameez/churidar. Western outfits and revealing clothes are not permitted.

Reaching the temple is convenient: arrive in Kozhikode city by train, bus, or air, proceed towards West Hill/NH66, and take Varakkal Temple Road. Local auto-rickshaws and city buses are available, with auto-rickshaws dropping visitors at the temple gates.

The nearest railway stations are West Hill, Vellayil (1.8 km), and Kozhikode (6 km). Calicut International Airport is 27 km away, and Kannur International Airport is 95 km away. Adequate open parking and basic mobility aids are available for elderly or physically challenged visitors.
