About

Sree Valayanad Devi Temple, also known locally as Thiruvalayanad Kavu or Valayanad Kavu, is a renowned ancient temple and pilgrimage centre situated in Valayanad, Kozhikode, Kerala.

Revered for its Kerala-style architecture and royal heritage, the temple is closely associated with the Zamorin (Samoothiri) rulers of Kozhikode, who are credited with its construction.

The temple stands as a living heritage site managed by a local trust, drawing devotees and visitors from across the region.

The presiding deity at Sree Valayanad Devi Temple is Goddess Shakti (Amman), and the sanctum also enshrines other deities such as Lord Shiva, Thevaara Bhagavathi, Lord Ayyappa, Vigneswara (Ganesha), Kshethrapaalan, and Sapthamathrukkal.

Daily rituals and special poojas are conducted in Sanskrit and Malayalam, maintaining the temple’s traditional spiritual ambiance. Darshan at the temple is open to all, with free entry for devotees. The temple timings are from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM every day.

The best time to visit is during the morning hours (8 AM–12 PM), evening aarti, the winter months from November to February, or during the vibrant festival season.

Major festivals celebrated here include the Annual Utsavam in January–February (Makaram), Mandala Season & Kalamezhuthupattu in November–December (Vrichikam), and Navaratri in September–October (Kanni).

Devotees can participate in a variety of poojas, such as Oru Divasathe Pooja, Undamala, Niramala, Viseshal Niramala, Chuttuvilakku, Deepasthambham Theliyikkal, and Valiya Guruthy, with specific offerings and rates.

Prasadam includes sacred ash, kumkum, and Guruthi Prasadam on ritual days, while Annadanam (free food) is distributed during the annual festival week in Makaram.

A strict dress code is enforced: men must wear a traditional white mundu or dhoti and be bare-chested, while women are required to dress conservatively in sarees, long skirts with blouses, or salwar kameez.

Photography, video recording, and the use of mobile phones or cameras are strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum and main temple premises. Sree Valayanad Devi Temple is easily accessible from Kozhikode city.

Pilgrims can arrive by train, bus, or flight, then proceed towards Mankavu/Govindapuram and take a local auto-rickshaw or taxi to Valayanad Temple Road. The Valayanad Bus Stop is just 150 meters from the temple gates.

The nearest railway stations are Kallayi (2 km), Kozhikode Main (4 km), and Ferok (8 km), while Calicut International Airport is 23 km away. Several accommodation options are available nearby, including The Raviz Calicut, Dimora Kozhikode, Nexstay Treats Inn, and La Mer Inn.
